I Love Music but Can't Play a Thing

Music is important to me, but I can't play instruments and that's frustrating.

I Love Music but Can't Play a Thing

Art, in its many forms, is meant to affect people. Various methods cast different auras on to people and bring various feelings to their consumers. Despite its immense commercialization, music is still an art form that reaches droves of devoted listeners. Artists craft unique sounds that can garner fans around the world who appreciate their subtitles and specialties. It’s this kind of entrancing intricacy that makes music such an attractive art form to me. I can’t go very long without some kind of tune to brighten my day, calm my anxieties, or bring back a memory. But, man, wouldn’t it be cool to do the same for other people?

It’s often overlooked just how special music can be. The more I look for new artists and rising stars, the more I realize that there is a soul in it all. There seems to be an overarching theme of a message or a unique don on the sound that makes a song uniquely theirs. For longtime artists, that unique sound evolves with every album and reveals yet another facet; Music with purpose is a window into the artist’s mind. That kind of charm and that kind of connection with people is so special in my mind, something so enviable. When you love music as much as I do, not being able to express yourself in it is very frustrating.

I’m a person who wants to be good at many things, especially when its something I like. By that very facet of my nature, it becomes a huge thorn in my side when I can’t express myself musically. I never really had any instruments to learn as a kid, nor was I exposed to teaching and things like that. I don’t fault my parents for this at all, I just realize now that I never explored an avenue that I would've liked to. I’m not sitting here to try and write the next coffee shop hit that you’ll start your day off to, either. The best way to describe it is when you travel to a nice foreign country that you don’t speak that language. The country fascinates you, charms you, but you can’t help but feel frustrated when you have such a difficulty communicating with its people. Then again, I’ve never been someplace I didn’t know the language… That’s what that’s like, right?

This frustration is something I’ve talked to some people about and I don’t seem to be the only one. Being musically inept is saddening in a world when its such a bright spot on so many lives. Fortunately enough, if you do happen to be lucky enough to land with an instrument in your hands, there are so many ways to learn. The Internet has so many tools to potentially pick up the instrument of your choice and get jamming. Whether you’re taking lessons from Dave the YouTuber who uploaded 2 videos on basic chords or paying for Masterclass lessons from Hanz Zimmer or Deadmau5, the end goal is still the same. This breadth of information allows for the proliferation and development of music.

This art form will remain the art form of the people, created with every stroke of the strings or press of the keys. While I may not be able to right now, take pride in being able to express yourself musically. Share your talent with the world! Contribute to the evolution of music. It’s far too powerful a medium to simply leave it alone, especially if you have that capability.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
