To my future daughter,
I've been dreaming about being your mother for as long as I can remember, and while sometimes I wish I could be like some of my other friends and have you now, I know I have to wait. I have to wait because I want to be able to give you the world my love, and I know I can't do that any time soon. Not only do I want to be able to provide financially for you, but I want to be able to provide emotionally for you. And that takes experience, so now I have to focus on myself so that one day I can give you everything you deserve. So here are my hopes for you.
I hope I can be half the mother my mom and grandma are. These two women are the strongest people I know in the entire world. Between the two of them, I always felt encouraged to reach for the stars but grounded at the same time. They also showed me that no matter what I can and will survive. They have been shoulders to cry on when needed but they also called me out when it was time to buck up. Both of them have put my needs before them on numerous occasions, giving me money to follow my dreams and go to school and study abroad, to even flying across the country on two days notice when I was really struggling emotionally.
And for that, I can never repay them. But I can pay it forward. I hope to be there for you the way they are for me. I hope to pick you up when you fall down and help you brush off the dirt. To kiss your boo-boos, both physical and emotional, and tell you everything will be alright. I hope to inspire you and encourage you to always follow your dreams, by following my own dreams now. I hope that my life sets an example for you, both with my mistakes and my triumphs.
I also hope that you grow up in a house overflowing with love. I want you to see what healthy relationships look like and that mommy and daddy love each other no matter what. I hope your dad supports you and protects you the way my dad has. And that he reminds you that just because you are a girl doesn't mean you can't do anything you want. My dad was my biggest supporter when it came to sports.
During races, I can pick his voice out of huge crowds and hear him yelling at me to catch that next girl or to speed up just a little to break my PR. My father even learned the world of figure skating, or at least, tried, for me. I hope that your father is that for you. That he always calls you his princess and makes you really believe it. I hope that he scares dumb boys away and tells you when he really likes one that you've brought home. And that when you can't see it and get hurt, that he is there to remind you that not all boys are awful.
Finally I hope that you grow up to be 10 times the women I will ever be. I hope that you find your passion and follow it, whether it be in sports, academics, or arts. I hope that by me being selfish now, you see that it's okay to be selfish if its to better yourself. So that's what I'm going to keep doing. I'm going to keep working hard and moving forward and making mistakes so that one day I'll be ready for you and the incredible impact you are going to have on the world and on my life.
Love,
Your Future Mother
