Love Your Melon is a company that hopes to improve the lives of kids with cancer. Founded in 2012 by two college students, the company has taken the world by storm. When you purchase a beanie with Love Your Melon, you're not just buying a hat for yourself--you're also giving one to a child with cancer.
These adorable beanies come in all types of styles and colors, and are perfect for these colder months. The company has been selling out so quickly, that every week or so they have a countdown until the next release. It's amazing how people are responding to this charitable cause. Love Your Melon has partnered with over 9,000 college students throughout 575 different schools nationwide. As college ambassadors, these students help sell and donate hats throughout their community.
Love Your Melon has Superheroes that visit these children in the hospital, and they've also held an East Coast and West Coast Smile Tour. These events have helped donate thousands of hats to these children. If these videos don't make you smile or give you goosebumps, I don't know what will.
Recently I've been hearing how "basic" it is to wear these hats. For those of you who don't know what "basic" means, it's something that people think is too mainstream for it to be cool. Essentially it's a term with a negative connotation. While wearing my Love Your Melon beanie to class one day, someone snickered and asked me if I was "one of those Love Your Melon girls," as if it were something to be embarrassed about. This was mind boggling to me. How could something with such a fantastic message be something to be embarrassed about owning? That remark did not sit easy with me, and I began to wonder how someone could ever think such a thing.
Every year, over 15,000 children across the country are diagnosed with cancer. Love Your Melon has already provided 45,000 children with their own hats, and they're not stopping there. The company strives to donate a hat to every child with cancer. If that's not commitment, I don't know what is. So if trying to improve the life of a child with cancer is "basic" then I will gladly be the most basic chick out there.
I'm willing to make a difference and support the amazing cause of Love Your Melon. If people think that it's too mainstream or unoriginal to advocate for such a cause, then so be it. If you're willing to stand up and support these children, then I encourage you to stand with me. Stand with the thousands of people who purchase these hats. Stand with their families. Stand with these kids. With one hat at a time, I encourage everyone to love your melon.
