A Little Love For Linfield

Anyone would love their school if it was ranked number two in their state for most value by Money magazine. Linfield though, gives us Wildcats plenty of reasons on top of being number two in the state to love it. For me and my Wildcat family, it’s the little things that makes this school our home and creates a burning love for it for years after.

It's tiny things like driving on to campus and seeing the beautiful brick buildings and the trees that make us love the school. As a tour guide, my favorite comment from visiting students and their families is how beautiful the campus is, as well as how large it is for only having 1,700 students.

It’s the small class sizes and being able to walk around campus and smile and wave at everyone, even though you might not know them personally! It’s the feeling of having an extended family here on campus.

It’s the tiny things, like going into the Dillin dining hall and grabbing an omelet from Patty, the omelet lady, or joining in on the collective grumbles of how much we hate Dillin, but then we move into the apartments or off campus and we wish we had it back (only a little bit! Ha!).

It’s the Fall leaves that then bring the winter grey and so much rain! It’s "Lake Linfield" after the first big rain as we all canoe to class! It’s the Hawaiians that walk in their "slippahs" in winter and their open arms to share their culture with us in our annual luau and all the girls swooning over Tala (girls, remember, he's happily taken).

It’s all of the events the CIC puts on, including those infamous Blazer tickets that are gone in a blink of an eye. It’s the Friday and Saturday night comedians and the Saturday night movies in ICE. It’s the free food and random therapy dog visits or even the therapy Llamas.

It’s our football team playing for “One Moore” and keeping The Streak alive in the Catdome. It’s the tailgates before the games and the rowdy student section. It’s the support for all of our student athletes and how involved they are outside of their sports as well.

It’s the musical once every three years and the theatre department that puts on amazing productions. It’s acting with Janet Gupton and taking pictures dabbing. It’s our art department and the amazing pieces that are shown in our student curated gallery.

It’s the freshman year roommates and everyone who lived in your dorm that year! Shout out to my Hew Crew, you guys made Linfield my home away from home. It’s raiding your best friends’ closets before going out on a Saturday night to Temple (AKA Thugs Mansion). Or just staying up until the crack of dawn talking and hanging out with people in the lounge “studying”.

It’s the little things that make me love Linfield and I would never choose to go to another school. Linfield is home and these wildcats are my family.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
