I'm starting to realize that many of the articles I've written have been letters.
This was not a conscious decision on my part, but I think there's something to be said about sitting down and actually writing a letter in an age when text messages and e-mails seem to be quick and generally less thoughtful means of communication. An actual letter feels more personal, more deliberate and less of an obligated response.
Today, I'm writing personally and deliberately about Pub Trivia. It's a trend that many other millennials have worked into their weekly routines, but to me, it's anything but a routine.
Every Wednesday evening, my friends and I meet at the Mason Jar in Eagan for trivia sponsored by Geeks Who Drink. This might not seem that important, but to me, it provides a sense of stability. It doesn't matter how crazy the week has been thus far, or how long the next two days will be until the weekend finally arrives; I know trivia night will provide a release from all of that, and a time to catch up with my friends.
According to our group spreadsheet (Yes, we're THAT team) we've attended regularly for 109 weeks, starting back in mid-June of 2014. We're on a Cheers-esque first-name basis with our Quiz Master and the regular waitress (shout out to Nate and Danielle). We have a friendly competition with another group of regulars (Troy and Abed Playing Pub Quiz is on a win streak over us at the moment). We've placed First or Second in 80 out of our 109 weeks quizzed. It's kind of a big deal (to us, at least).
Once a week, I know I'll have great food, great company and a great night to unwind a bit before continuing the grind and finishing out the week. I highly recommend finding a quiz of your own - Geeks Who Drink has a ton of locations, not just in the Twin Cities but across the country. Or check out your local brewery/tavern, chances are they'll have a trivia night.
Take a break from your week and relax with your friends while giving your mind a little challenge. Grab a drink and a quiz sheet. Add a little stability to the chaos. You won't regret it.
