A Love Letter To Delta Zeta

From before college to forever

A Love Letter To Delta Zeta
Person: Kaylee Gates

Dear Delta Zeta,

I've known I wanted to join a sorority for a while, ever since I heard my family members talking about how great Greek life was. I didn't have one certain group in mind, but I knew I had to go to a college with a Greek community. When I finally chose the school, I started researching all of the different sororities. I'll be honest with you -- I didn't expect to love it as much as I do.

The first Greek interest night, I was really apprehensive. I had no idea what to expect. What I did know was I had no idea how I was going to choose. I know I really liked Delta Zeta, but I knew I liked others also. The last Greek interest night before rush week, I talked to our President and realized how fabulous she was, which made me even more excited about rushing.

When rush week came, I think I made sure every last hair was in place. You were the last sorority I visited, and I knew from that point how much I loved you. Values night showed me that I was going to be surrounded by a great group of women. Philanthropy night came and the video you showed was so sweet it made me cry. And the final morning before bid day, I felt a connection to my soon-to-be bid day buddy that made me so excited to begin this journey.

I don't know what I expected on bid day. Waiting for my name to be called to get my envelope felt like an eternity. I knew that envelope would have been filled with two different colors. But when I opened it, the one I really wanted to appeared. Pink. I knew I was a Delta Zeta. Eventually we all got put in pairs of three and lined up to run home. Walking to the gym and hearing the rumble of all the sororities made me even more excited than I already was. It was finally our turn, and when that banner was dropped, it all began. A lot of screaming, a lot of girls running, and a lot of excitement. Shirts were given out, pictures were taken, and the love for DZ began to grow.

It has been almost a year since we started this journey together. Throughout this year, you've given me sisters, sisters that I can rely on and turn to for anything. You've given me a home away from home. And you've given me a lifetime of memories. I can truly say I love being a Delta Zeta.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
