The newest craze for the past few months for beauty gurus and makeup crazies everywhere is Kylie Jenner’s newest line of liquid lipsticks and glosses first released early April. Because Kylie Jenner was named one of the most influential teenagers in the world last year, her new line of makeup products have been increasingly popular.
All of Kylie's fans, including me, waited intently to get our hands on her first batch of liquid lipsticks which seemed so unique because it was paired with a lip liner for $29. At first, this price did not seem so bad because it would be about $15 for the lipstick and $15 for the lip liner. Many customers found buying one silly because there’s a $8.99 flat rate shipping fee, which would make anyone cringe in disappointment. So your much anticipated Kylie Jenner Lip Kit costs upwards of nearly $40 for one shade.
As she released more shades, the more I wanted and the more I spent until I realized something. A lot of the shades are similar to lipsticks I already own and can get much cheaper at local drug stores or Sephora. I admit, I am obsessed with liquid lipstick. I rarely go out without a bold shade. So I went through all of my lipsticks and found matches to Kylie’s products. Some of them are nearly indistinguishable, if not the exact shade, and are a considerably cheaper price.
I compared swatches of Kylie’s liquid lipsticks with my own drug store and Sephora brands and I thought they were closely related to the exact shade:

As you can see, most of the colors on my swatch are very close to the original—excluding Kylie's 22 which I did not match. The following are the names of Kylie's lipsticks and my recommended alternatives with their costs:
Koko K = Stila All Day Liquid Lipstick (Carmello) $24
Exposed = NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream (Abu Dhabi) $6
Candy K = Maybelline New York Vivid Matte Liquid (Nude Thrill) $8
Dolce K = Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip (Chi) $6
Posie K = Lime Crime Liquid Matte Lipstick (Riot) $20
Mary Jo K = Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick (Sarafine) $20
Kourt K = Sephora Liquid Cream Lip Stain (Blackberry Sorbet) $14
True Brown K = Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip (Limbo) $6
Besides being almost exact duplicates of Kylie's shades of matte liquid lipsticks and glosses, ever since her first release, there have been mixed reviews about their quality. Complaints of faulty brushes, cheaper formulas and high shipping prices deterred many from coming back for more of the lip kits—including Jeffree Star, a cosmetic enthusiast with his own line of makeup. Star slammed the product, explained his disappointment and said that the wands were unacceptable. Kylie made a statement through her app and Kylie Cosmetics explaining she is sick of people attacking her business and wants to give her customers the very best, which she claims she has been working on.
Whether you are a die hard Kylie Lip Kit fan or not, there are alternatives for her shades. Whether or not you buy them for the name brand is up to you. Choose wisely.
