There has been so much tragedy over the last week. Christina Grimmie, who was a YouTuber as well as a former contestant on The Voice, was killed at her own show, a little boy was attacked and killed by an alligator, and 49 innocent lives were taken by an individual who couldn't stand the sight of a gay couple openly expressing their love. What’s even more unfortunate is that all of these events happened in the same state, and in the same city. As a country, we have experienced an unimaginable amount of loss and heartbreak, but the support that we have shown one another is truly astounding.
I have never seen our country support anything as strongly as we have supported Orlando through this incredibly tough time, aside from 9/11. Blood drives have been overflowing with donors, and kindness has been selflessly given to anyone and everyone in need of it.
In regards to the Pulse shooting, this type of tragedy is something you shouldn't wish on your worst enemy, because this tragedy was unnecessary and inhumane. No one should have to die for loving who they love. There is simply no reason, and that is that. Love knows no gender, no race, no religion. All love is equal, and it’s upsetting to me that people still see the LGBTQ+ community as a “problem” or as a concept they deem to be “wrong”. Everyone is a person; everyone has their own lives, their own stories, their own experiences. Every person has hopes and dreams and goals and futures, and taking their life away because of something as minuscule (in retrospect) as their sexual orientation because it bothers you is disgusting and cowardly.
To anyone who has lost hope, remember that we are the new generation, and with the exception of the few who unfortunately still believe in the wrong ideas, we have the power to change the world. We have come together time after time (especially in recent years) to show our love and support through both tragedies and triumphs, and we continue to spread hope so that it shines in the darkest corners of our lives. More importantly, to anyone who is still hurting, and to every individual who has had their lives wrongfully taken from them this past weekend, I’m keeping you in my thoughts and I'm sending you all of my love; every ounce of it that I have. To those who are afraid to be who they are, and to those who believe they are broken because they do not conform to the societal norm, you are valid. You are beautiful, you are worthy, and you are valid. You are not broken. You do not need to be fixed. You need love, and if you don't receive enough, then I am here to give you all of mine. You are not alone, and I will always be right here to help you fight your hardest battles and to cheer you on from the sidelines. Love is all around you, and it always wins.
