Usually, when I tell people about my majors, they all have the same reaction. Most question what a Humanistic Studies major even is, followed by what can you even do with that in your life? While having two majors (History and Humanistic Studies) within the humanities field may seem pointless or useless to some, it has proved to be one of the most beneficial experiences I have ever had.
Learning about history in so many different aspects between my two majors has only furthered my understanding of the world. It has given me a completely different perspective than I would have had without it. I can not only appreciate what has happened in our past but how that has truly impacted what is happening in our world today. I truly believe that without knowing where we have come from, we will not be able to find success in the future.
Both of my majors alike have fostered an entirely new set of skills within me. I have the ability to think critically about important topics. I can synthesize and articulate my thoughts much better than I ever could before. I have read and engaged with many different literary works, art pieces and music that I probably would not have without my majors. I have had much more exposure to different cultures which had helped me tremendously in my day to day life.
Even though two majors in the humanities may not be traditional for some, it has truly changed the course of my life and my college career. The opportunities for life post-grad are endless because I have been so well prepared by my experiences in these majors. History and Humanistic Studies are much more than just the memorization of dates, times, and places. It is an opportunity to see how people lived, worked and survived while they were alive the same way we do now. Everything I have learned I take with me and apply to my everyday life which is why I'll always love my humanities degrees.
