My Love-Hate Relationship With Technology

Ways technology helps us and hurts us.

My Love-Hate Relationship With Technology

I have a love-hate relationship with Technology. Technology is a fantastic thing. It causes so many great changes for the world, and so many good things come out of having it around. On the other hand, technology is something that I sometimes wish would just go away. So many bad things have come from technology, and I wish that it would change.

It seems like nowadays, you can’t have a conversation with someone unless it is through text. In-person conversations have dwindled. When you’re mad at someone now, you ignore them in person, and then send them an angry text later. At dinner, it seems like nobody can stay off their phones for more than five minutes to just enjoy being in the presence of friends or family. Everything has turned into “I’ll just text them,” rather than going to speak to someone. Often times, people are too concerned with their phones to even think about manners. I was on crutches a few weeks ago trying to get into a building, and a girl was texting on her phone walked in right in front of me, saw me struggling, and then let the door shut anyway. I was truly baffled that she could not put her phone down for three seconds to help me out and hold the door. Other times, you see people who are busy texting and can’t seem to say “please” or “thank you.” It kills me to see that--especially when its people my age. We grew up when technology was starting to boom, so a lot of our childhood was spent without phones. Now that we all have phones, we sometimes forget what manners are. On the other side of that, technology has made contacting people so much easier. We don’t need snail mail, email, AIM, or anything like that. We have a phone and people are always a call or text away. Having it is very convenient for contacting people.

Another reason why technology sucks sometimes is because of all the bullying that has come from it. Cyber bullying is something that is a very serious matter, and it ruins some people’s lives. You send a snapchat or a text, and all of a sudden it is screenshotted. When it is screenshotted, they post it online or send it to other people. All of a sudden, everyone knows what you said or did. Many people commit suicide because of things like this. People lose jobs, friends and relationships because of the things that are screenshotted and posted. Everything can just be posted on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media. Hundreds- even thousands of people see what is posted. Once it is up, it is there forever. Even when it is deleted, it is still there. It sucks that people often times use technology to ruin someone else’s life or hurt them in some way. On the other side of this argument, technology helps spread the word so quickly. People can be made aware of things that are going on in an instant. With the click of a button, we know current issues, topics of debate, and positive things going on in the world.

Technology is something that we have all learned to live with. We all have some form of technology and can use it well. There are so many great things that come from technology, but also so many bad things that have come from it. I wish that we could just find a good balanced point where the good would outweigh the bad all of the time.

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
