[To preface this article, watch out for spoilers if you haven’t watched "Gilmore Girls" all the way through. And if you haven’t watched "Gilmore Girls" all the way through, please go do that.]
"Gilmore Girls" has and will always hold a special place in my heart. After watching a few thousand episodes (I don’t think I’m exaggerating), buying the box set, and scoring embarrassingly high on any trivia that I seek out… I wondered, Why? What about this show captured my heart as an angsty teen and still makes me smile in college? Part of the beauty may be that its not something we can put our finger on. But I tried anyway.
Here are a few reasons why "Gilmore Girls" will never get old to us:
1. Stars Hollow was home for us all:
Luke’s Diner, Miss Patty’s School of Ballet, and the Dragonfly Inn were staples in this community that gave us the warm and fuzzies for seven seasons. From the quirky characters, to the elaborate festivals (the Knit-a-thon is my favorite) -- Stars Hollow embodied the whimsical small town feel that we all dream to be part of. Sitting in my college dorm room, I identify with Stars Hollow and its inhabitants the same way I did in the 6th grade.

2. The characters struggled… just like us:
Almost every character throughout the series struggled whether it was personally, financially, academically… you name it. The struggle to put Rory through Chilton and Yale was a financial burden that weighed heavily on Lorelai’s shoulders. And it forced her to reconcile with painful memories of her family. Rory battled to keep up with her competitive schoolmates at Chilton, facing opponents like Paris Geller. Both women had their fair share of trials with men. We all have our favorites (I’m a Logan/Luke girl, if anyone was wondering). The list goes on and on -- and the struggles are real. They’re filled with self-doubt, worry, and a genuine effort to do what is right. I can certainly relate to that. After Rory has her first ever break-up, Lorelai teaches us all about the best way to cope with heartbreak.

3. They embody the successful women that we’d all like to be:
Lorelai was a teenage mother at the age of 16. She set out on her own with a new baby, no money, and no family to support her. After becoming the manager of the inn where she started as a maid-and simultaneously attending business school -- she opened her own inn. Rory eventually worked her way up to valedictorian of Chilton. Later, she is named editor-in-chief of the prestigious Yale Daily News. In the last season she devotes herself to her career rather than to love -- a decision many of us are too afraid to make. These are strong, passionate, and driven women that don’t let men stand in their way. They approach hardship with humor and their heads held high. Who wouldn’t want to fill their TV screens with such inspiration.
There are so many reasons why these hilarious, spunky, hard-working, women will always be in my “favorites” list on Netflix. I’ve only named a few of the million reasons above.
Thank you for your existence, "Gilmore Girls."
