I’ve got a love for the little things.
I love my cute rearview mirror charm that says “I Think I’ll Just Be Happy Today.” I loved the smile on my best friend’s face when she came around the corner on her birthday to see me standing with a cupcake and a balloon in her kitchen. I love the bracelet that stays on my wrist that reads, “Jeremiah 29:11.” I love sitting in the corner at a bookstore and reading books I know I’ll never purchase, let alone finish. I love sitting in the park with a devotional and watching people pass me by. I love pictures that capture the small moments and the big ones; my camera goes everywhere. I love my water bottle with the flower print that says, “Happy Camper.” I love adventure and the mystery that comes with it. I loved this morning when two good friends pulled me out of my car in the parking lot to join them in prayer before school. It’s the seemingly small things that make up an entire day, and an entire lifetime.
How is it that the simple reminder hanging under my rearview mirror can turn my day around?
Why does drinking out of that particular water bottle make me feel good and why does that verse on my wrist give me the courage to do anything? Here’s why: God loves the little things.
He uses my best friend to show me the value of friendship and the importance of togetherness, to show me the good in myself and in others. He uses that bracelet to remind me that no matter what I go through today, that there is nothing He and I cannot handle together. He uses the small moments and the big ones to prove to me how beautiful life is and how blessed I am to live the one I do. He uses adventure to teach me what it means to trust, and how to go into each and every day with faith that there are amazing things in store. He used those two friends this morning to remind me that I should meet him no matter where I am, no matter what I’m doing or no matter how I’m feeling: confident or not. He uses all these “little things” to remind me that there is beauty in everything.
God loves small numbers. In 1 Samuel 14:6, Jonathan told his armor-bearer that it did not mean a great deal to God whether or not he saved a few or saved many.
God loves small people. In 1 Corinthians 1:26, the members of a church looked around. They didn’t see any big celebrities, or people the world would consider strongly influential or rich. God chooses what the world would consider “nobodies.”
God loves small gifts. In John 6:9, a boy gave his lunch to Jesus and turned around to being able to feed five thousand. In Mark 12:42, a widow gave a small two cents and was sent on her way, giving more than anyone else had: everything. Neither the boy nor the widow knew the importance of their small acts upon doing them; the little things go a long way.
God loves small moments. You asked the kid sitting alone to sit with you and your friends at lunch. You prayed and said “I give up, it’s all yours.” You flashed a smile at the guy who needed it the most. Again, the little things always add up to be the things we talk about and remember for years and years to come.
The small numbers, people, gifts and moments are the ones that go on to change our lives forever. So the final question is, what are your little things?
