The Many Definitions Of Love

To me, love is more than just a definition.

The Many Definitions Of Love
Gabrielle Flores

The definition of love:

-an intense feeling of deep affection.

To me, love is more than just a definition. It's scary. Most people who are looking for love in reality are just lonely, they settle for less than they deserve because their biggest fear is to be alone and die alone. Settling for less prevents one from experiencing real intimacy. You're afraid that something you say may not be the right thing. You're afraid it might fail. You can't be scared to love...you can't be scared to constantly fail. You know that when you wake up, that's the person you want to do life with -- have kids, grow old, spend the rest of your days with. You know that's the person you wanna 'til death do us part' with. Knowing everything about them and still wanting to know more. Your eagerness to know how their day was or what they're up to. Wanting them to succeed because you know their capability. Seeing the good and understanding the bad. Love is empathy. Being truly selfless and putting yourself in their shoes before speaking or acting vulgarly. Love is not second guessing; it's not wondering if that person may have feelings for another. Love is knowing that this person, this human being, is the only human being that your soul longs for. Love is fun and full of laughter. Love is looking into one and not seeing their flaws, but seeing their impeccable soul instead.

Real love is divine. That divine love comes from a relationship with God. Love is being with someone who helps you to exceed in your faith. God created us to experience love and companionship. God did not intend for humans to live in isolation.

Love is experiencing God together.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease: where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away." 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

I asked a few of my friends for their definition of love and this is the result...

"Love is putting someone else's needs before yours and always being there for them, no matter what." -Lauren Hannon

"I think love is being able to be your complete self around someone. Like singing really loud in the car together and not caring how horrible each other's singing is. Or sending super ugly snapchats to each other and not screenshotting them." -Gabrielle Heinen

"Love isn't easy and it's not a vacation. It is a job. It's all work, but in the end if you put in the work it will pay off. It's also not a one-way street, because love goes two ways." -Caleb Navarro

"God is love. Whoever lives in love, lives in God." 1 John 4:16

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
