Why I Love Catawba College

Fair Catawba, my Catawba.

I've decided which friends I want to keep around, what to order at Olive Garden or what I want for Christmas for years. But when it comes down to it, as an almost-18 year old, I haven't made many huge life decisions. I'm talking the really big ones. And the biggest one yet has been where to go to college.

I'm happy to say that I've made the right choice in Catawba College.

I know, I know--I've only been in college for about one month. But that's exactly why I'm so confident in my feelings. If I didn't absolutely love this school and my choice already, I wouldn't be glad to go to class every day. I wouldn't look around at campus as I walk through thinking about how beautiful it is or how lucky I am.

So why do I love Catawba College? Well, a lot of reasons.

I love my classes. I know, crazy right? I love that my professors know my name, go out of their way to check in with me on how I'm adjusting to college life and that they truly care about educating me. The personalized education that I'm already receiving would not be available to me on a "big" campus. Not only does this make my education better and more enjoyable, but the connections I'll make with my professors will give me connections that I need when I graduate.

I love the community. We are small, and at first I wasn't sure how I'd feel about that. But walking across campus and seeing familiar faces that I know I can count on for a smile and a "hello" is a gift. The fact that every first-year student was invited to President Lewis's home for candy and conversation at the beginning of the year was extremely special. How many people can say that they've listened to the "Hamilton" soundtrack with their college president? Everyone talked about the community here when I was in the application process, and now I understand why. Catawba really feels like a family.

Catawba gives me opportunities. Every day I get an email about another speaker who's visiting campus, a volunteer opportunity, or a chance to mingle with students, staff, and faculty. In the remainder of this month alone I can listen to Dr. Mark Achtemeir speak about sexuality and religion and learn from Diana Cohen about plastic pollution and how we can improve the health of our planet among other speakers. Catawba puts in effort to give students a well-rounded, truly liberal arts education outside of the classroom as well as within.

Another huge aspect is our pride. Catawba is quickly climbing the ranks on multiple lists of colleges. Recently we've been named the fourth best regional college for the south by U.S. News and ninth in the nation for best college theatre according to the Princeton Review. These are just two examples among many of reasons to be proud. Catawba is on the map--and we know it.

I could continue to ramble off reasons why I love Catawba and why I encourage anybody to apply, but I'm not going to. Why? Because I'm going to go enjoy all of these opportunities and experiences that I just told you about.

Picking a college is a huge decision--and I keep being showed why I made the best one for me. Fair Catawba, my Catawba.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
