Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines love as a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties and an attraction based on sexual desire. However, I think that there are too many ways to describe love. Love is an immensity that we cannot contain or even hold within our minds. Love is everything we want it to be and everything we don’t.
If you’re in love with the show How I Met Your Mother just like I am, then you know the heartfelt speech that Ted gave Robin when she was freaking out about her wedding. If not, you can watch it here. In the speech, he talks about how love doesn’t need to make sense in order to be true. We as humans do a lot of things wrong, but love is not one of them. We can’t touch or hold love, but we see and feel it every day. We see it with our family, friends, and significant others. We see it in their laughter and smiles, we see it in their eyes, and we see it in their actions. Actions that seem small, but are signs of love nevertheless such as holding a door open, putting a blanket on you when you pass out on the couch, or even handing you toilet paper when there is none less in the bathroom!
We all know the classic love stories such as Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, and The Notebook, and these are what we want to believe love is. Boy falls in love with the girl, girl falls in love with boy, and everything is happily ever after (not really in the case of Romeo and Juliet, but still). However, in real life, we have to work for love. Love is scary, love is compromise, love is giving all you have to another person and hoping that they will give it back. Love is the best thing we do, and I can’t imagine what we would be without it.
