Why I Love Being A Desk Assistant

Sitting behind a desk may not sound like much but it's everything to me.

Sophomore year, I decided that I needed a job to help pay for gas, food, and any other things that I might need (or want). I wasn't sure if I could handle being an RA, so I heard about the DA job and decided to give it a try. My first year was absolutely wonderful so here are some reasons why I love being a desk assistant.

1. The Staff.

I can honestly say that I have the best staff to work with. From the day that we all met we knew that we were going to become really close friends. We're together for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday and we all live in apartments near each other. We always have a blast and already have a ton of inside jokes.

2. Being Able To Help Students.

Just because I'm not an RA doesn't mean that I don't help other residents as much as they do. You're the first smiling face that they see when they enter their dorm building. Lots of students come down to the front desk with different problems ranging from cable issues to even roommate disagreements. They're trusting you to help them with whatever issue that they have and it's such a good feeling.

3. Learning Good People Skills.

While working at the desk you learn how to deal with all different types of people. Sometimes students and even parents come to the desk in rage about something that isn't working right or might be missing. With these experiences you learn how to speak to those who are upset and you learn to think on your feet if you're not quite sure how to handle the situation.

4. Being Friendly With The Maintenance Staff.

In the building that I work in, the different staff members that come in and out of the building are probably some of my favorite people to talk to. The main maintenance guy always makes the early shifts so much better for me. He always has some of the best stories and gives me really good advice if I need it. Don't disrespect those who keep your living environment clean.

5. Meeting Lots Of Different People.

With being a desk assistant you meet lots of people that live in the building that you work in. It's really nice being able to get out and meet new people that don't live in the same building as you do. I've made a lot of new friends since becoming a desk assistant and I couldn't ask for anything better.

Going on my second year as a desk assistant, I can't wait for all of the new residents that I will have the pleasure of meeting. I can't wait to work and become closer with the rest of the RA's and of course, my fellow DA's. "Thank you for calling Tyson Hall, this is Jen. How may I help you?" #DASquad

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
