If you were to walk into my dorm room on any given day you’d probably find a desk chair overflowing with discarded pairs of sweatpants, jeans and sweaters. Next to that, about 20 empty water bottles are most likely overflowing from the trash can, threatening to let the last sip of water I always leave on the bottom spill all over my carpet. My backpack is definitely lazily thrown somewhere around the room, my ridiculously large Spanish textbook lying next to it, opened and turned to page 100 something. Pictures will haphazardly line the walls, some in pretty frames, others hanging from clothespins and hooks, a few simply propped up in random locations because I couldn’t bare not having it displayed for all to see.
And among this cluttered existence there is something that dominates it all; an overabundance of quotes about love, most specifically, ones stating that it is all we need.
Now, it’s no secret that I’m obsessed with this quote. My friends constantly make fun of me for having more than one glittery canvas paying homage to the popular Beatles song but I just ignore them, it’s a beautiful saying with an even more beautiful meaning and I think this country needs it more now than ever.
This past week, after witnessing the first election where I actually semi knew what was going on, I have seen more blunt hatred than I have ever personally witnessed.
Passive aggressive Facebook posts, nasty Instagram hashtags, rude and insulting DM’s and flat-out name calling have been flooding my feeds and upsetting my ears for the past few days and I only have one question; when did we start hating each other?
While I understand it’s impossible for every human being to sing songs in harmony, we should still be kind to one another and regard everyone’s opinions with the respect they deserve.
How amazing is it that each one of us is gifted with our own way of thinking and feeling. No two people deal with a situation in the same manner, so we should not harass them because their reaction to something is different than ours.
Basically, we all need to find love in this clutter of a world because, without love, we don’t really have much.
So, stop with your Facebook rants and aggressive messaging and embrace life for what is; a beautiful mess with some love in between.
