So this video, “Is Grant Keith from Buzzfeed?” from CollegeHumor, is a video that makes satire out of the similar appearance between CollegeHumor’s Grant O’Brien and Buzzfeed’s Keith Habersberger. At first glance, it’s just a fun clip commenting on their similarities, but the longer the video runs, the more jokes appear and these jokes aren’t all that easy to spot if you aren’t someone who regularly watches these channels.
Thankfully, I am—but I still had to do a triple take, so let’s lay it all out.
The video begins with Trap watching a Buzzfeed video that features Keith (from Buzzfeed), who is also a member of the Try Guys—remember that, it’s important—and then Trap asks the question, “Does the guy in this Buzzfeed video look like Grant?” which sets off the doppelganger antics. Grant (from CollegeHumor) denies that he’s Keith (from Buzzfeed) and then Grant (from CollegeHumor) points to left and the camera pans to a table where Keith (from Buzzfeed) is sitting (and he’s sitting in the CollegeHumor office, so the uncanniness is starting to build).
Trap starts to question both men, but as he does the camera begins to cut between Trap and the two others (Grant from CollegeHumor and Keith from Buzzfeed, for clarification). The more the camera cuts from between them, the more often Keith and Grant switch clothes to take each other’s place. All of this keeps irritating Trap, until Keith and Grant’s “identical twin brother’s” appear and say they look different. That prompts Trap to say, “No, you’re all the same,” which then causes them to respond with “No, Grant's taller,” then Keith asks, “How tall is Grant anyway?”
Right here another layer is added. At 1:50, Katie says, “Oh don’t even get into with him,” and props her legs up on the desk “it’s a whole thing,” but something is wrong. They’re freakishly longer than they should be.
This moment is in reference to another video called, “How Tall Is Grant?” which also features Trap, Katie and Grant, where Trap again asks about Grant’s appearance. Except, this time he’s asking about Grant’s height. The video makes Katie out to be much taller than Grant at one point, with extremely long legs, so that explains her long legs in the Grant and Keith video and why she says not to mention Grant’s height.
The Grant and Keith video continues with Trap growing more and more enraged, until he begins to yell at Grant, Keith, and their “identical twin brother’s,” and asks who this other person is. Grant points to the new person and says, “Trap, that’s a mirror,” then it is revealed that Trap’s reflection looks like Grant.
After that the video ends, but not the layers. There is a small bonus scene, which features the rest of the Try Guys in what I believe is supposed to be the Buzzfeed office. The bonus scene begins with the Grant and Keith video ending on a laptop screen and then cutting to a shot of Grant (from CollegeHumor) surrounded by the Try Guys (of Buzzfeed). He asks, “Do you guys think I look like Grant from CollegeHumor?” and all the Try Guys say no. So, Grant (from CollegeHumor) is supposed to be Keith (from Buzzfeed) asking if he is Grant (from CollegeHumor).
But then—oh yes, another layer—Eugene asks the group “Are you f*ckers ready to give-it-a-whirl?” to which they all say yes. This is a reference to another CollegeHumor video called, “The Give It a Whirl F*ckers,” which is a parody of one of the Try Guy videos. The thumbnail of this video is even similar to Buzzfeed thumbnails, featuring the yellow, circle sticker that has grown synonymous with the brand.
After that bonus scene, there aren’t any more layers and the video is officially over. There you are, all laid out. If you didn’t get mixed up by the end of this, I salute you.
