Scared to Feel: Spoken Word Poem

[Verse 1]
I feel my voice stripped like Neil Perry
This world, I'm livin' in is more than, just real scary
And the truth is my peoples, I'm scared to feel
Self-estrangin' myself from the world, to feel whats real
My past and future pull my limbs apart, until the blood of my bone marrow gushes out,
and rushes out to the pavement,
Concrete floors on the street, my school establishment,
It's like i can't even talk wit out the congested commotion, within
communication, sentences shortened, dismissive, lackin' emotion

[Verse 2]

Nowadays, its like people just wanna hurdle verbs
like they wanna fight
people wanna understand yo situation, then listen right
the sole reason I'm on the mic
is I can't be interrupted
enliven my words from my voice, get a following constructed
Society ain't communicatin' much, our vocals is disrupted
compensate our coherence in our text messages
which leads with the presage of silence by,
we the people, but we were given mouths to speak
If our souls is modernized, and subjugated by our frail phones and noxious televisions,
We need to envision a better world of understandin',
cause our mouths, freedom of speech been clutched and abducted
We internalize all our feelings, and let em droop,
And other folk blurt words out like they blueblooded, socially isolated
from gettin' too much screentime
Where do the cracks in the silence, show a little beam shine?
Decline in our stress reactions, maladapted refine up in my mentals
I'm so lost in reality, and between time

[Verse 3]
If communication should work, give the megaphone to the voiceless, let em repine
Talk wit the same level of volume, then let em be
but this reality, is really disconnectin' me
Cause you hear most things, but you selective to lies,
You listen to loose words, yet the meaning's been died
all I want to do is leave this earth and just cry, if you have to make most people talk,
You might ask yourself why, silence ain't always golden
you got voices, use em
If you an artist, that's yo obligation, bruise em

[Verse 4]
Give your life a voice cause ain't nobody gonna voice your soul,
Mention all your failures, short, long, aspirations and goals
askin' myself if I don't talk, then who will?
speak up for friends and family, but it's yo shoes you gotta fill
It's best that you talk, the listener will know you real
Not hidin' behind text messages, and contextless shields
Ambiguous, suggestive emojis, concealin' what you sneer,
Withdraw when you shed tears
Act out when you break from fear
Existential moments when you near a cliff, wishin' you weren't here
Please, speak up, its up to you and I to be honest
Because nowadays, text messages will lead to a broken promise

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
