Dear President Barack Obama,
Thank you for leading this country for the past eight years. Myself and others have benefited from some of the policies you put in place, so thank you.
I have purposely avoided discussing the 2016 United States presidential election with anyone outside of my family for fear of losing friends. However, the events of the last few weeks have left me so appalled that I have lost my faith in our political system and there was no way I could not write about it.
First off, Donald Trump is now the Republican nominee. I cannot understand how the Republican party can support a man who accepted congratulations for "being right about radical Islam" after the Orlando shooting, offended women multiple times, called all of Mexican heritage rapists and wants to build a wall along the US-Mexico border. Since North Korea pretty much is at war with the US, we need a president who can handle North Korea with tact. So, the Republican party thinks Trump is capable of that?
Second, Hillary Clinton became the Democratic Nominee. I know I'm going to get backlash for this, and I know you support her, but the idea of a Hillary Clinton presidency scares me more than a Trump presidency. The reason is because Congress can put a stop to Trump's outrageous proposals. I am not so sure Congress will be as successful with Clinton.
I am aware people are tired of hearing about the Clinton email controversy, but it's not something that should be swept under the rug and forgotten.
While Clinton was Secretary of State, she used her private server to send emails and at least 100 of those emails were marked as classified. If Clinton mishandled sensitive information as Secretary of State, what is she going to do as President of the United States? If any other person had used a private server to do official government business, they would have suffered serious consequences. If Clinton was "extremely negligent," why wasn't she charged?
We also know that Clinton has a history of exaggeration, take the Bosnia incident, where Clinton misspoke about being under sniper fire, as an example. When Brian Williams committed similar acts, he was disgraced and demoted.
I and many others do not trust her. Your 2008 campaign said that "Hillary Clinton. She'll say anything, and change nothing. It's time to turn the page." You didn't trust her eight years ago, what changed?
I feel as if the American people will have to choose between two evils come November.
On
Thursday, August 4th, you held a press conference at the Pentagon.
During the press conference, a reporter from “The Associated
Press” asked you about Donald Trump's comment about the election.
Mr. Trump said, “I'm afraid the election's gonna be rigged. I'll
have to be honest.”
You responded, "Of course the elections will not be rigged. What does that mean? The federal government doesn't run the election process."
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Trump.
Mr. President, this is what a rigged election means.
There was some controversy over the California Democratic primary election. Anyone who voted but was not a registered Democrat did not have a list of presidential candidates. I know this to be true because an individual, who I know very well, told me about the lack of presidential candidates on their ballot before it was revealed on the news. Until I did research for this letter, I did not know that Non-partisan voters need to request a presidential ballot for the Democratic primaries. This is something that should be mentioned in a high school senior's U.S. Government course.
Recently, nearly 20,000 emails were leaked on WikiLeaks. These emails were from the Democratic National Convention (DNC). In these emails, it is evident that the DNC preferred Clinton over Sanders. One of these emails contained a suggestion to spin reporters' coverage of Sanders' campaign in a negative light. The DNC is supposed to be neutral and yet clearly did not do that.
Mr. President, Donald Trump's fears are justified and (just this once) he is not ridiculous. This entire election process has been suspicious and questionable from the very beginning. Because of this election, I have lost my faith in the U.S political system. When you talk about criminal justice reform, you should also consider speaking about election reform as well. I no longer believe that the United States government has the people's best interest at heart.
Thank you for your leadership.
Sincerely,
A disillusioned millennial.
