In light of all of the disaster going on in the world, both natural and man-made, we are hearing of heroes coming from every corner. Most of them are celebrities, with the capability to donate millions of dollars.
But what we don’t see are the people who are working hands on in order to save the lives of those caught in the unfortunate position of disaster- earthquakes in specific.
On September 19th, 1985, an earthquake shook Mexico City, killing nearly 30,000 citizens. Because of how overwhelmed the rescuers became, a group of about 10 people from Mexico City decided that they had no better way to spend their time than to help save lives--what could be more important?
On September 19th, 2017, yet another earthquake rocked Mexico City, destroying buildings, companies and many citizens again. Los Topos began to come into the spotlight for the work they had been doing over the past 32 years with very little recognition at all. Their efforts no longer will go unnoticed.
After their first volunteer rescue in Mexico City in 1985, they traveled to El Salvador to aid in another earthquake. Then to Japan, after a tsunami struck the region. They didn’t stop there. Their efforts then expanded from Colombia to Haiti to Nepal and all the way back to Mexico City in order to bring their relief into full circle back at home.
These are the heroes who have gone unnoticed for 32 years, the ones who climb through the rubble and the pieces of toppled down buildings searching for the lost bodies of their neighbors.
“Los Topos” are the men you should think of the next time you wonder who is exactly saving those in trouble...the name you won’t forget.
