Waking up from a long and stressful night dealing with a newborn and studying for midterms, she finally prepares herself for a much-needed grocery run. She brushes her weave, puts on her brand new top, then straps up her favorite heels. Finally, she grabs her Micheal Kors purse and heads out to her Honda Accord.
She collects her items and pays with an EBT card at checkout. She feels scornful looks and stares coming her way and prays for understanding. The weave she brushed was bought for $15 at the local hair store and put in by her aunt. That nice shirt was $5 at Rue 21 and those favorite heels were a Christmas gift from her mom. Her MK purse is a knock-off. That 2014 Honda Accord she is driving was given by her church family due to her dedication. She was only shopping at this store because she had just applied for a job.
Now that story time is over, let me explain my reasoning behind this. On April 3, a Facebook user posted this status and took this picture:
"Can someone please explain to me why the person in this picture deserves a Louisiana Purchase card any more than I do?? Nothing like going to the grocery and the person next to you is dressed in a nice dress with high heels, freshly done hair do, freshly done nails and a big Michael Kors bag on her arm and paying for a basket and a half of groceries with a Louisiana Purchase card? I would like someone like Mr. John bel Edwards or some other politician in this state to explain to me how this works!!! This is the 2nd time I've seen something similar to this in the last 30 days and I'm [*******] furious! Rant over"
My only comments are that you don't know a person's story nor does a person have to look poor. I've experienced comments like the above and though my head was held high, I could only think, "How far would a person go to make someone feel belittled or like a parasite." What bothers me the most about situations like these are most of the accusers claim to be Christians. We must remember we are only stewards of our finances.
Some like to argue a lot of people are not using government funds truthfully or are taking advantage of it. For me, honestly, if I am living comfortably financially, I do not mind some of my money going towards helping families because I believe Jesus would do the same. He would not sit around discussing what people did with it the money. He would not care if it was 80/20 or 20/80. It would not worry Him if one person was buying a new purse and misusing the funds because He would simply have joy, yes joy, in knowing another person somewhere was able to feed their family because of Him.
