Looking Back at my Quinceanera

Going through all the memories makes feel very nostalgic.

Every once in a while, I enjoy going through old videos and picture and talk about those amazing moments with my closest friends and family. My quinceañera is always at the center of these memories. Having my quinceañera was something I dreamed of as a little girl. I was excited for the puffy dress, the elaborate dances, and the huge party. It's part of my culture. Six years have passed, and I still enjoy looking back at it. Although there are a few things I would've changed, it's funny to think about all of the bad things that had happened.

1. My horrible up-do

I originally didn't want to have my hair out since I had my quinces in El Salvador at the hottest time of the year. However, due to a horrible language barrier, the hairstylist gave me a mini-Snooki hairstyle. By the time I realized her mistake, it was already too late. I had to leave for the church mass right after. Looking back at all of the pictures taken that day, I can't help by cringe at how my hair looked.

2. Walking around in that dress

It may have been a pretty dress, it was extremely uncomfortable. It was super puffy and huge. I had to walk around very carefully in case I fell. Add a pair of heels, it made it even more difficult.

3. The father-daugther dance

People would think that the father-daughter dance is supposed to be feel very emotional. For me, however, that wasn't the case. Unfortunately, my mom was unable to attend my quinceañera. That meant my dad was in charge of the whole thing. With the amount of stress he had that day, he was yelling orders to everyone throughout the dance. Talk about a great father-daugther dance.

4. People fighting over the centerpieces

Centerpieces and other party decorations are slowly disappearing throughout the entire party. I saw several people looking for any tables with leftover centerpieces to take home. There were some instances where people would argue over who got to take decorations with them. Something I was completely not expecting.

5. The party crashers

Even though it was invitation only, it didn't stop people in the neighborhood from showing up. Thanks to word of mouth, a party for 200 ended up being one for 400. Instead of kicking them out, my family and I decided to just let them stay and enjoy themselves.

6. The rest of the party

Once the stress of the dances and getting ready is over, the actual party begins. Time for some cake and amazing music.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
