Looking Forward To The Future

Yes, I know that the future is very scary. I understand the a lot of people, including me, find the future very nerve-wracking and anxiety producing. Even thinking about next week causes a slight panic attack for me but that isn't the point. Think about back when you were a little girl or boy. For me at least I remember not wanting to wait to grow up and be an adult. I remember my little friends and I sitting and talking about what our weddings would be like and what our houses would be. I remember my career choice changed quite often as well. I wanted to be everything from a ballerina to a marine biologist. I had the biggest imagination ever and as I grew up I lost that. A lot of people lose their imagination as they grow up because they experience real life. The things that they dreamed of happen, and usually they aren't the way they were planned out.

For example, all little girls think about marrying the love of their life. What they don't factor in is the heartbreak and the tears it takes to find the love of their life. Once you grow up and meet the love of your life, all you can think about is the future. You want to plan a life together and you want to have kids and raise a family with them. Once you get into college and get on the right track, you look forward to being whatever it may be that you are studying. Yes, watching my parents go through adulthood showed me that you may have a job, family, and house, but adulthood is not easy. There are struggles everyday but if you are persistent and put your mind to things, you can do anything you want to.

If looking to the future scares you, think about something that is coming up that is going to be fun. For example, I think about summer all the time because it is time off from school. Time to relax and spend time with the ones I love. The summer is as far I can think in advance. Sophomore year and beyond makes me get a little anxious and that is completely fine. Everyone is different with the future. I know I am talking long term right now but the future is even in an hour and a day and a week. You have the ability to change your future at any time. You have the power to transfer schools, ask out your crush, say goodbye to people who are not making a positive impact on your life. You are in control of your own future and I hope you always remember that. So go out there and make your future the best that you can. Most of all, remember your happiness comes before everything.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
