There's a lot to be said after the election on Tuesday. After Trump's victory, our country has continued to be divided for and against him. Many of those who voted for Trump believe that America needs a change; maybe change is good. However, those who support him argue that we need the government to be "like it used to be". If that were to happen, under Trump's Presidency, the government were to be run the way it was in the past, our country would remain divided. Gay marriage would not be legalized. Women would not be in office. Minority groups would not have a voice. Change is good, but change needs to continue in a progressive direction.
Last night, men and women of a multitude of races, cultures and ethnic groups were elected into office. This is progress. However, highly conservative views, as held by Trump and his supporters, no longer embrace our country as a whole. Such views are targeted toward the wealthy white male population, which whether or not you want to believe, still holds a lot of power in America. This is exemplified in Tuesday night's polls. This is why people who do not support Trump are in fear. But we, the people as a whole, also have a voice. We are the reason for the changes that are already being made. Those men and women elected last night were elected because of their political strength, not because of the way they look, or for what they believe in.
With that said, as President of the United States, Trump will not get away with racism, sexism, homophobia, and all else that our country is so worried about. He was elected for a reason, and I hope those who supported him during the election gave him their vote because of his political strength, too. I hope he was not victorious just to keep Hillary out of office. But now that he has been elected, change is inevitable. If the government is run "like it used to be”, it would diminish our progressivism. Therefore, we can only hope for a positive change unlike ever before. A vast majority of America voted for this change, so now it is our duty to support, to love, and to let our voices be heard so that the progress we've made continues as progress. We are diverse people, but we should not be treated as such. As implied by the name of our country, we should all be united.
