Looking Back At It: A Letter To My High School Best Friend
Ally Rosenfeld

Looking back at it,

you are my rock, my shoulder to cry on, my cheerleader and, most importantly, one of my best friends out there.

We have known one another for a crazy duration of 4 plus years. We have conquered so many obstacles together, enjoyed countless times of laughter from our inside jokes, cried over the smallest things and have vented out some of the most personal things to one another. Looking back at it, high school was such an amazing experience with you being such a large part of it. Beyond my academics and various classes, you were there when I needed you the most, and, for that, I would like to extend a large thank you.

For starters, our inside jokes and laughs are so fantastic and enticing. There are so many that I could list right now in this letter to you, but, quite frankly, no one else would understand what in the world we are even speaking about! I love having that special bond with you, that truly doesn't compare to anything else. Every friendship that an individual has with one another is unique in its own way. And, I am especially lucky that the friendship that we share has so many humorous aspects to it.

I would also like to thank you for accepting me for who I am, as you would know that I would and still will always do for you. You knew me during my younger years as an underclassman in high school, and were there to cheer me on and give me the immense amount of motivation to strive for the best. You only wanted and still do want me to achieve my largest goals that I have set for myself in life.

And, as you know, the feelings are completely and utterly mutual. A gigantic smile arises out of my face whenever I hear the great news that you aced a test you studied countless hours for, or maybe the try that you scored in your rugby game. You aren't only one of my best friends from my high school years, but I have no doubt whatsoever that we will remain so very close for the rest of our lives. Someone who has had such a big impact on me in such a positive way, deserves more than anything to be in my life wherever life ends up leading me. I promise to be there for you whenever you need me at any given time. Although our schools may not be right around the corner anymore, if you need me just know that I willbe there.

We always talk about what we want to do with our lives when we grow up. Being bridesmaids for each other and hopefully teaching classes of children near one another. Our futures hold big and exciting expectations to come, but, for a moment, I would like to reminisce on the past.

Thank you for being there for me to talk to whenever I was experiencing typical boy drama, going on crazy wild adventures with me, having endless sleepovers and making sure that we both got to school at the same time each morning so that we could sit next to each other at breakfast. I couldn't have asked for a better partner in crime.

With lots of love, this note is most definitely for you,

Ally.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
