My hair has transitioned from the days of my first haircut to my lice scare. I have been to several different beauty parlors in my life. Following David Alan, I went to a chain called Supercuts and remember never brushing my hair prior to a haircut.
My hair was always a tangled mess coming into a haircut, but it was beautiful leaving. In my later middle school days, I realized that I needed a step up from Supercuts and decided to go on a more elite, mature, and professional hair journey. I stepped into Studio Nina’s shop with my parents’ approval. My parents used Nina, the store’s owner, prior to me and thought that her work was stupendous.
My father’s first encounter with Nina was hilarious, and Nina, who has since become close friends with my mom, tells us this story to this day.
My father is a criminal defense attorney and oftentimes enjoys doing research on cases in order to help himself. Upon his first visit to Studio Nina, he asked Nina many questions about the laws and regulations behind her beauty certificate and about her shop ownership. My father came across as an interrogator, and before she knew him, Nina was convinced that my father was an inspector through his presentation and mannerisms. However, he was solely attempting to find claims for his case.
After years of going to Nina, I decided that I wanted highlights as a seventeen-year-old. In my youth, I had hair that was naturally golden blonde as honey. However, my hair had darkened over the years, and I missed my hair roots. Therefore, I felt that it was time to jazz up my hair. I am a purist and refuse to do anything inorganic to my body, but when Nina expressed to me that she had a product that would give me natural looking highlights without chemicals, I was sold. Nina gave me a total makeover. First, she painted my hair with a white paste, and then she let my hair sit for quite some time.
Afterwards, she washed the thick, gooey white substance out of my hair, and then cut my hair while it was wet. She then blew my hair dry and gave me a clean, gorgeous look. While my hair looked different, I was content that my highlights did not seem to be an artificial shade of blonde.
Nina has done me well, and for the past four-and-a-half years, I have been going to her twice a year for a haircut and highlight job. I feel as if she is my new dentist, who I also visit twice a year for care. Self-care is important, and I understand that part of treating myself well is receiving beautification.
I am not one who judges a book by its cover or obsesses over my appearance, but I am one who enjoys feeling fresh. Nina has the power to make my hair look healthy and full of life, and I am grateful.
I have always sported thick hair, and I take pride in grooming and maintaining my head bush. My hair is a golden waterfall cascading down my shoulders. I attempt to stray away from straightening, curling, or blowdrying my hair frequently because I do not want my hair to eventually thin. I love having my hair played with, and I feel that is part of the reason why I enjoy taking trips to the salon. My hair is a part of my identity because people know me by my hair and by looking at me from the back where they see my hair.
I am proud of my hair, and I will never be ashamed of who I am and the head where my hair lives.
