In an article posted a few days ago, it was revealed that the Student Body President and Vice President at the University of Texas at Austin (tsssss*) created a website for their students to vote as to whether or not they want to resume the football rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M.
Just to clarify, every fiber of my childhood has been waiting for this moment. My grandfather was an Aggie, my cousin was an Aggie, and now I am. The legacy of pride that is passed down to new generations at both schools is undeniable. We see this as the two biggest and most popular schools to root for in Texas, as well as part of arguably the longest standing college sports rivalry (almost 100 years) in the nation. I finally showed up at A&M in 2015, and the Longhorns were no longer in our conference.
So, as an Aggie, I need to see this happen for a few reasons.
1. My inner child would be celebrating like it's Christmas Day
Back in the 5th grade, the kids in my hallway lined up alphabetically in our classes for gym to make sure everyone was present. Any college shirt day, the Friday before a game, or the Monday following, the boys in my class would yell across the gym at boys in other lines for the jersey they chose to wear and the team they supported. "How many Longhorns does it take to screw in a lightbulb?" and other jokes were commonly made at the expense of others. I'm thinking of giving a couple of them a call if this game starts happening again.
2. LSU is the alternative
Their slogan is inappropriate. They scratch up senior boots on purpose. If you were to ask me why the tiger crossed the road, I would tell you it's because they can't cross the goal line. We want a true opponent, and we want a Texan showdown.
3. Conferences don't keep anyone else apart, so why just us?
Baylor and TCU have played one another since 1899, but TCU has only been a member of the Big 12 since 2012. The powers that be were letting "Purple Baylor" play outside of their conference for a rivalry game for over 100 years. Where is our game? The injustice!
4. The War Hymn literally says that the Longhorn fight song "sounds like hell"
It's in the lyrics, man.
If you are anything like me, if you find yourself outraged at the demolition of our rivalry and if you want to see Old Army thrive again, show your support and share this article with all your Ags and, uh, our "friends" down in Austin. We unfortunately cannot vote as Aggie students, but we can back the best decision the Longhorns have made since taking on Mack Brown in 1998.
*I'm an Aggie. Sue me.
