Why Longer Workouts Don't Mean Better Workouts

Myth: The longer the workout the better that workout is.

Excuses, excuses. “I don’t have a gym membership.”

“It’s too cold outside for me to go on a run.”

“It’s way too hot outside for me to go on a run.”

“I don’t have time.”

I recently had a conversation with a guy who would not be swayed on that excuse. When I said to him...“What, you don’t have 30 minutes?” he laughed in my face telling me that any workout that was worth it would take at least an hour and a half. Let’s debunk all the reasons this man gave me as to why a 30 minute would never be acceptable

1. You can’t really focus on a muscle group in that amount of time.

Yes, you can! Perhaps you can’t join all the bros at the gym and try to work on your arms for 2 hours, butfaster reps at a high intensity can reward you with the same results as a full day of lifting.

2. That’s not enough time to do cardio and strength.

Again, yes, it is! You don’t need to do a long winded run or bike ride to get in cardio, set aside ten minutes of constant cardio moves. Whether you do a ten minute sprint on the treadmill, or break it up into moves like jumping jacks, leaping lunges, jump roping, punching bags, or any other cardio moves that also focus muscle groups, you’re just killing two birds with one stone at that point, and your body will thank you for it.

3. "I can’t just not use weights." (Tip: never be double negative, and never use double negatives!!)

Why not lose the weights? Body weight training is so effective! Weights are great, but if you’re pumping out an intense thirty-minute workout, one of the best things you can do is practice moves that use your entire body, and that make you stronger through your own weight. (You could also invest in some weights or resistance bands if you need more resistance.)

4. 30-minute workouts only really work for girls.

Ok, well if this is true at all it’s because we’re freakin’ awesome. Seriously, what does that even mean? Yeah our bodies act differently to some things, but I guarantee you that your heart works just as well as mine and your heart rate will still increase just as well as ours when you start working hard. This one doesn’t even need much debunking… it’s just a really bad excuse.

5. It just isn’t worth the time.

A short workout is better than no workout! However, in the end, attitude is everything. Whether you’re working out 30 minutes a day or 3 hours a day, the workout will do nothing unless you’re motivated and believe in the work you’re putting in. If you choose to never workout over putting in a short thirty minutes a day just because you believe it “won’t be worth it,” then you’ll probably be right.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
