Once Christmas is over, the cold and dry months seem to pass by in slow motion. Never-ending days turn into never-ending weeks, and never-ending weeks turn into never-ending months. With the exception of having a birthday in one of these months, there's really nothing to look forward to, except for the sporadic days warm weather returns to us.
The cold weather drags on, and often times our moods fall. So what better way to brighten everyone's spirits than a holiday focused around love?
While the idea of Valentine's Day is awesome and spreading love and positivity is a great thing to do, why do we limit it to one day a year? Sure, being reminded that you're loved and cared for by your significant other or friends and family is an awesome feeling, but why do we wait until February 14th to truly express those feelings?
I'll be honest and admit that, yes, being in a relationship on Valentine's Day is a great feeling, and having someone who wants to celebrate you is such a warm feeling. But what about the rest of the year? If you are in a healthy relationship, you should be celebrated all year round, through the good and the bad.
Another skepticism of the holiday is the actual history of it. History tells us that, in Ancient Rome, from February 13th to 15th, women would line up to be, uh, beat by men in hopes of getting fertile. Yeah, you read that right. Why would society want to keep celebrating a holiday with such a gory past? For the money.
Valentine's Day brings in a load of money through the sale of candy, flowers, and any other materialistic items that are supposed to signify our love for someone. So, why do we keep celebrating? Because our major supermarkets like Target tell us to, and for the hopeless romantics who wait all year for this holiday.
In no way am I saying we shouldn't celebrate Valentine's Day. It's an awesome opportunity to show the people in your life that you love and care about them, but maybe we shouldn't limit this expression of gratitude to one day a year. If you have your sights out on someone, send them flowers. Ask that guy in your class that you never talked to but definitely want to on a date. Buy your significant other flowers just because.
Valentine's Day can be a beautiful thing if society as a whole can celebrate it more than once a year.
