An Open Letter To My Other Half

She believes she's my twin in female form

We all know that there has been a few hundred to a few thousand publications about someone’s best friend. Sometimes, it’s important to remind them that you are thankful for everything they have done for you. I just wanted to write an open letter to my best friend before I enter college so she knows that I will want her to be my best friend no matter what. So, Erica, let’s hope you get ready to read a letter about how amazing you are.

Dear Best Friend,

I can remember the first time we met; I was a baby freshman in our Graphic Design class, you were a junior, and I randomly came up to you to have a conversation. The thoughts in your head were probably like “who’s this freshman boy, why is he talking to me,” little did you know that a few weeks later we would hang out at the powder-puff bonfire; this bonfire was the start of our friendship, we talked like we knew each other for years and I never felt so welcomed to high school until I met you. It’s always so weird to think that’s how we became best-friends from a powder-puff bonfire.

The moment I knew you had such a kind soul was during cheerleading, because you knew how badly I wanted to cheer and my parents wouldn’t let me try out, so you came with me to find Coach to get her to convince my parents to get me try out. You took time out of your day to help me figure out the whole cheerleading issue, because you wanted me to cheer and you knew how I badly I wanted to cheer. I was so thankful for this kind-hearted act.

.

I don’t think you and me have ever fought at all nor had an argument where we didn’t talk for days, which is weird because we are so alike and usually people who are so alike usually fight here and there. Speaking of being so alike, you are literally my twin, just in girl form obviously. I can say this because we have the same interests and we both find certain things hilarious that no one quite understands. The one interest we have a lot in common is cheerleading; it’s literally something we talk about every time we see each other.

You’re the best friend I have always asked for, because in time of advice or crisis you have been always there for me. You always know how to put a smile on my face, when I’m upset and I hate crying in front of people but you are the only person I feel comfortable crying to you. Also, every time I have something weird to say, you always just give me that look like “why are we best friends?” then you laugh because you find me funny.

We have this weird bond that people don’t understand especially, because you and I are two years apart. People at work don’t understand why we always get excited to see each other during our shifts; they don’t know why we laugh randomly either, which you usually see in a mall when two friends just laugh about something that they only find hilarious.

When you left for college, you never abandoned me; you always sent me weird snapchats and messages saying you miss me. I thought honestly I was going to lose my best friend when you left to go to school, because I was still stuck in high school but you always found a way to communicate with me. I mean, you would always FaceTime me in the middle of the night, which I loved. As you were starting a new chapter in your life, you remember me and always me apart of it. Now it’s my turn to start a new chapter and I would like every annoying part of you in the process of me growing up.

This is a new start for me, I’m about to start college at BSU where you attend. Yes, people I’m going to the college where my best friend goes. I just want you to always know I will be in your dorm annoying you, even if it takes me 15 minutes to walk to your dorm from mine, I’ll be there to annoy you. In all seriousness, I just want you to know that since I’m starting college, no one can replace you because you will always be my best friend. You will be “my person” who I can lean on, be weird with, and express my emotions with. Here’s to a new chapter in our life, from high school to college. I hope your BSU friends are ready for me. I love ESL and you adorable laugh. I can’t wait to be a Bear with you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
