The older I get, it seems as if the simple moments I experience are what make life extraordinary, rather than the nights ending with a big bang. It became a regular tradition for my friends and me to get in the car on a Friday or Saturday night, hand someone the aux. chord, and play a game we called "Left, Right or Straight."
Essentially, we would spend the night driving around some back roads, and once we get to an intersection the driver would yell, "left, right or straight?" Whoever yells the first direction is where we turn, and we drive on until we have no idea where we are. (And then we usually consult our good friend Google Maps to take us back to campus).
Of course driving and having a car in general are never cheap, but the memories and moments you experience in those car rides are worth more than any dollar amount, and here's why.
1. You're more aware of your surroundings
Driving without a solid intention of where you plan to go keeps you on your toes to see where the road takes you. Sometimes the unexpected and unplanned trips you take end up being the most memorable.
2. It teaches you to think on your feet
Specifically with "Left, Right or Straight," it teaches you to adapt to new changes, especially when it comes to navigating your way back to your original destination.
3. You learn more about each other
Silent car rides are never fun, and adventuring to an unknown destination sparks a various amount of conversation topics.
4. You may stumble upon a beautiful, undiscovered place
Going on a mini road trip or late night drive may end up taking you to a place you've never been before. It can be as simple as an abandoned house or an outlook of twinkling city lights. Either way, you find the tiny, beautiful pockets this world holds when you least expect it.
5. It's an opportunity to get everything off your chest
Sometimes calling a friend to rant isn't enough, and a car ride with just the two of you is a more personal way to get it out. It has the perks of privacy while going on an adventure.
6. You'll never forget the memories you make along the way
There have been so many times I've been in the car with my friends with the windows down and stereo blasting, and in that moment, everything felt so right. As if everything and anything I was stressing about had suddenly disappeared and I was exactly where I needed to be. It's such a satisfying feeling that makes it all the more special when you're with a friend.
