Loki is one of the most misunderstood characters in the MCU.
When Thor was released in 2010, my inner nerd was actually screaming her whole way to the Marvel masterpiece. And if you've known me for any length of time, you will absolutely know of my odd love of Thor's younger brother, Loki.
Prince of Asgard.
Odinson.
The rightful king of the Jotunheim.
God of mischief.
Now, I could rant forever about he was done very dirty Infinity War, but instead, I'm going to focus on the first Thor installment and hopefully get you to see why Loki wasn't wrong...and was done dirty...but the first time it happened.
To start things off, Thor and Loki were both raised to be kings by Odin. As children, Odin essentially lied to both of his "sons" and showed favoritism to his firstborn. Now, I know that in the setting that Asgard is shown in is more medieval and patriarchal, but in all common sense, if two sons were close in age, the worthier son would succeed to the throne. While Loki was favored by his mother, Frigga, all he wanted was Odin's approval and he was constantly denied it for his older brother.
Another reason that's kind of the elephant in the room is the fact that Odin stole him from Jotunheim and raised him as one of his own. So, Loki is a frost giant and literally had no idea until he got dragged into his brother's war and grabbed by a frost giant. Consequently, he turned blue and was absolutely mortified. As a child, he grew up hearing horror stories about the frost giants and he grew to hate and fear them as much as the other Asgardians. I can imagine how horrified he was to learn he was something that he deemed to be so terrible and evil.
In the film, it was shown that Frigga, the Queen, made Loki king of Asgard after Thor was banished for his arrogant attack on the frost giants. And his friends, upon learning of this, absolutely showed him no respect. While respect must be earned from the people around him, Hogunn, Fandral, Volstagg, and Sif had known he and Thor since they were all children. It was most likely extremely hurtful to Loki that his friends didn't have faith in him and want him on the throne. Not to mention the fact that they turned on him when they asked Loki to do the literal one thing he couldn't do—end Thor's banishment. To do so would've made Asgard look weak and foolish, and Thor was banished for his own actions against the throne.
All in all, Loki is one of the most—if not the most—misunderstood characters in Marvel history. Or, if you're a fangirl like me, the most misunderstood antihero ever. Regardless, the treatment of Loki as a whole was completely uncalled for a punch to all of the feels, and he definitely deserved better than what the Thor and Avengers films have given him. After all, he is the rightful king.
