I volunteered at The Loggerhead Marinelife Center my freshmen year at PBA in West Palm Beach. If you live here, go to school here, or just happen to be on vacation you need to stop by. The Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a sea turtle rehabilitation center. They have onsite marine biologists, veterinarian staff and over 350 volunteers. There are multiple ways to volunteer at this center, I was in the education department. I would volunteer once a week and educate the guests on the sea turtles, general information, facts about them, the specific turtles story and whatever else the guests may have questions about! I have answered many odd questions where guests even have told me they have found a sea turtle in their pond! Then I have to explain that there are different types of turtles for fresh water and salt water, which many people don't know!
Visiting the Marinelife Center is absolutely free but they do ask for donation if you wish to give. They use all the donations for sea turtle operations, food and medication. When a sea turtle is completely healed they have release days. Over 1,000 people gather to see the sea turtle off back into his environment; the ocean!
A few of their current patients are named K. Sea, Brie and Bear.
Bear, Hawksbill
Brie, Loggerhead
K. Sea, Green
These three turtles are all different species of sea turtle. There are seven different types of sea turtles, but in Florida there are only three or four found commonly. I will post the three links to each of their stories below! I highly recommend visiting the Marinelife Center if you ever get the chance to. I also will include their homepage which includes volunteer information, their story and all of their conservation work. Hope you check it all out!
