Locals Vs. Tuskegee University Students

Since I have become a student at the illustrious Tuskegee University, I have gotten a closer look into the topic of conversation around campus. With that being said, I have noticed that there is a big problem that must be addressed and dealt with in order for this city and university to grow. I am from Tuskegee and also a student here at the university, and it makes me upset to see how the majority of the students view this city and the people that live here. Most go off of what they hear or assume how the “locals” are as a group. Like any other city, you have people that sometimes make bad choices and do things to put others in danger. That shouldn’t be the view of a city as a whole. When you hear Tuskegee, you think of intelligence, standards, greatness, history, love, spirit, and so much more. So, when I hear students at Tuskegee University, where they decided to go for their higher education talk so badly about my city, it makes me wonder. Why are you stereotyping a city before you can even get a close look at what we have to offer and the people that are from here that have made this university what it is?

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.
