Growing up, I always heard that you should never live with your best friend if you want to stay close with them, and I really did take this to heart for a long time. But as I got older, I started asking myself, why is this such an ingrained lesson in my life? Is living with someone you are very close with really that bad? Well, I can tell you for sure now that living with my best friend has actually been the best. From wine nights in our pajamas to having days where we stay in our rooms and our only communication is through texts, here are 10 reasons why living with your roommate is actually the best thing ever.
1. You never have to worry about leaving your pet alone for a night again.
My roommate and I both have cats, and I also have a dog, so on nights where I might stay somewhere else, I don't ever have to worry that my little babies are home alone, cause I know they have their aunt Abby to take care of them. It saves money, and is a huge stress relief.
2. Don't have enough money for something? They got you.
At the bar, Chipotle, or the grocery store, I can always count on her to cover me when I need it. And it gives you a reason to buy 2 bags of chips instead of one because they're on sale, 2 for $5, anyway and you really need more chips right? She'll back you up on this purchase.
3. Clothes no longer have real possession. Everything is shareable.
Gone are the days where your sister doesn't let you wear her shirt because she's scared you will get something on it, because your best friend trusts you, or just doesn't care if it gets stained, and it's the best thing ever. If you're the same size as your roommate, then your wardrobe just doubled in size and chicness.
4. You become a part of their family.
Being an out of state student, I can get a bit homesick. But when her parents come to visit, I feel like my parents are also here. Having your roommate's mom fold your laundry for you is the sweetest thing ever and reminds you how awesome having a parent is. And you might get a free home cooked meal if you're lucky.
5. You can walk around the house wearing almost anything and not worry about being judged.
Don't feel like putting on pants? Haven't showered in three days? Been using dry shampoo for days on end because school is stressful and hair washing takes up too much time? All of this flies when you live with your best friend because they love you for who you are and don't care what you look like when you're at home. It's a free pass to look like crap and still get loved like nothing is different.
6. No more wine nights alone!
I remember the days where I would want to unwind with a glass, or bottle, of wine but didn't want to do it alone. Well, when you live with your best friend, any night is viable for wine night and it will instantly make your bad day so much better when you not only get to drink wine, but you get to complain to your best friend about your day and then pass out on the couch with them. It's the best kind of therapy there is.
7. You can recruit them to like the same shows and then have shameless marathons.
Have a show that you love and want to dish about with someone else? Have no fear, your best friend/roommate is here! If you like a show, most likely your bestie will like it too, and now you have a partner to binge watch all the episodes you can in one day and not feel guilty about it at all.
8. You can trust them to not do anything ridiculous, and if they do, you can call them out on it.
All roommates have disagreements and problems, but the best thing about living with someone you're really close with is that it's not anxiety producing to bring up these problems. If she's been slacking on dishes or cleaning, you can call them out on it and know that it won't cause a huge rift in your relationship, because you are both adults and know when to own up for not doing the dishes enough. I'm sorry Abby and I love you for picking up the slack.
9. You always have a grocery buddy!
Gone are the days of going to the grocery store alone and buying things you probably don't really need out of boredom. Your roomie can keep you on track, and even give you suggestions on what to buy. Who knows, you might feel productive that day and buy food to do meal preps together. You'll probably forget about it as soon as you get home, but your roomie wont judge you for not doing what you planned because they're also your best friend and they love you anyways.
10. You gain a sister.
Having a best friend is like having a sister from another mister. You have similar interests, you know their pet peeves, and you can complain about your family to them without feeling bad, because they're not your actual blood sister.
