I suppose you could say this is an idea that I think about a lot. For me, this is not just a simple question. It is a mantra. Because I believe it becomes so effortless to be cemented into one's daily routine and to forget to question if what we are doing with our lives is actually sustaining us mentally and physically.
This is a challenge, and it is meant to be. It is so easy to plateau, and say "where I am at is just fine with me." But it takes courage to admit that as humans, we can always improve and grow. I think that is the difference between living and existing. When someone is existing, they are stuck in a mundane illusion.
It is difficult for them to be aware that they are in fact stuck. I like to reference The Odyssey to help people visualize this concept of existing. In particular, the island of the lotus eaters, where once the lotus flower is tasted, the characters who are affected are in a trance and they cannot realize that they are trapped because they are captivated by the magical effects of the lotus flower.
In short, it is difficult to force ourselves to say "this is not good enough." But we must do this in order to survive in a world that is constantly improving around us. We must acclimate to our surroundings, and quickly adapt to changes. Or similar to the island of the lotus eaters, we too will become enchanted by the routine aspect of our lives.
