The grass is often greener on the other side, isn't it? Some people beg for more space, but when you have to much your interiors can look empty and cold. The dreaded "dead space" occurs when you have an awkward space in your home, with no way of filling it. When the space is clear, it looks so cold and empty, but place a random piece of furniture there, and you could risk a decorating disaster.
What should you do with these dead spaces? Some care should be taken before you go filling them up. I prefer to fill up these spaces with something practical, but you may want to add something purely aesthetic, why not both? Here are ten of my favourite ways to fill up those empty spaces in your home.
Please be seated.
Adding some functional seating space to a room is always a good idea. If your dead space is in a corner, this Santorini arm chair would be perfect, with its warm leather and comfy cushion drawing you in.
House planted.
Oxygen cleaning indoor plants are always a welcome addition to any interior. Plants can refresh our minds and keep us calm, adding some green to your space can uplift it and ad a relaxing atmosphere. Some popular indoor plants include the Boston fern, Devils Ivy, and Peace lily.
Easel up.
I love adding easels to a room; the raw materials lend an earthy, arty side to your interior. You can add an easel with a painting for an imaginative way of framing an artwork. If you aren't afraid of getting messy, why not convert your dead space into a painting nook? Filling up space and creating art, what could be better?
Make a statement.
Find a bold or beautiful piece of furniture that contrasts with your space. If you have a modern or minimal theme to your living room, a raw, natural piece like the Santorini armchair will certainly make a statement.
Store it.
The gap under your stairs is a particularly tricky dead space to fill. Adding some storage or shelves will not only alleviate the empty look but give you practical storage. This can be applied to all spaces that need some filling up.
Instrumental.
Remember when I said I like to fill up space with something practical? A musical instrument can be both functional and beautiful. Do you only have a small space? Add a guitar on a stand. Musical instruments create drama and intrigue and invite your guests to explore.
A work of art.
Good art is like a mirror turned inwards on society. Art can tell us who we are, where we have been, and where we are going. Add some life to that empty wall with a piece of art. University graduation shows can be an ingenious way of finding up and coming talent, supporting the arts community and grabbing a bargain.
From another time and place.
Visit an antique store and see the many wondrous objects that remain from a time long past. An antique or relic can bring a sense of worldly charm to your living room. Breathe new life into your living room with a reminder of how life used to be.
It's lit.
Fill up space with the lightest of all things, light! A standing floor lamp can add structure and purpose to a lifeless wall as well as creating ambience. For the DIY'ers out there, try hanging some string lights over some wall hooks.
If you feel like your living room is cold and lifeless, don't despair! There are plenty of creative ways to fill up your dead space and breathe life back into your living room.
