College is a special time in people's lives because you get to go out into the world with new-found independence. However, more often than not, you are not a full-fledged adult paying the bills and figuring out how taxes work.
*Cringe*.
What has been great about this year of college though is that I have been living off High Point University's main campus in The Village. I have found some pros and cons of this lifestyle and that for everyone else living off main campus, I understand how you feel.
1. Going home.
At the end of the day when classes are finally over, you get to go back home. Separation of school and home can be important and living off main campus can give this to you. I remember thinking last year that living off campus was a ridiculous idea. Who would ever want to be away from the accessibility of everything? Thank goodness that I do live off campus this year because I absolutely love it. One of the best feelings ever is coming home and knowing I am away from my classrooms and the chaos.2. Parking.
I bet as soon as you saw that word, your mind raced to four different memories about this struggle and you're like, "F*ck parking." Parking can literally be the worst thing ever and if you go to High Point University then you definitely understand. Unlike most schools, HPU lets freshmen have cars on campus AND they let people bring two cars if they want to because apparently only one Mercedes isn't enough. Whether this is true or not, I heard that the school is trying to get rid of parking in the middle of campus and just put parking around the border?! High Point, this isn't helpful!
3. Food.
Real quick, can we appreciate the beauty that is this gif and how amazing Emma Stone is?
Anyways, now this is strictly speaking to The Village lifestyle. Within it's gated section, there is a place to eat called The Grille which is, I think, one of the best places to eat. What's even better about it is that it is a normal food swipe than a magic meal. This is a blessing because besides getting Farmer's Market in the morning, no where else on campus has good food for a regular swipe.4. Cold rainy and winter days.
5. Pool.
Now, when the days are beautiful and 85 degrees and above there's a pool in front of The Village, what can you expect? This is truly a blessing because we are no where near the beach, but at least I still get to lay out in the sun until I go back home to Florida. Another plus about this is that unless you live in Centennial or have access to the Greek Village pool, the only other one available on campus is Slane pool. There is nothing wrong with this pool but it is easily populated so having your own pool off main campus is fantastic.6. The Trolleys.
Let's play the game of "will we make it to class on time or not?" It is incredibly helpful that the school supplies a trolley system for people who live off campus, but it can also be a struggle. I understand that nothing is perfect, but the trolley system is sometimes awkward with their times. I have waited for an excessive amount of time before or have even seen both trolleys for one line at the same stop at the same time. With that being said though even though I have my car on campus with me I take the trolley more often than not because parking is so bad on campus. It is handy though when I missed the trolley and I am then able to take my car.
7. That awkward hour-ish break.
Thank goodness I don't have this problem this semester, but I can imagine that it is never the greatest. Sometimes classes are not back to back but they are not far between either. When you live off campus, if you only have about an hour break, it's not worth it to go back home. Friends may be in class or busy so you have to find ways to entertain yourself for this period of time. With all the pros and cons of living off campus, I have still come to thoroughly love it. There's nothing better than going to my cozy den of a room after a long day. For anyone who is thinking about living off campus or are still deciding, I hope this has helped you decided.
