I'm from a city that isn't exactly a tourist destination. When I talk to people that don't live near me and I tell them that I'm from Springfield, MA they often have preconceptions about this city, mostly about how dangerous it is. So yes, like any city, there are parts that aren't exactly safe, one look at the news can tell you that, especially recently. But from my personal experience having grown up here, it's all about how you take advantage of its opportunities, and who you surround yourself with. Springfield is full of undiscovered and raw talent, and there has never been a lack of intelligent students, whether it is in one of the numerous high schools, or one of the amazing colleges in the area. I personally received an incredible education at what is considered to be an inner-city high school, and that was because I took advantage of everything that was offered to me, I give a lot of credit to the exceptional teachers I have been lucky enough to have met along the way. This is the background that has allowed me to spread my wings and has given me the fight and perseverance that I needed to move away from home to pursue my dreams. Ironically I moved to an even bigger and more culturally diverse city.
This city has made me who I am, I firmly believe that. As a white, middle-class female, that grew up in a city with no shortage of cultural diversity, I feel blessed. I think diversity has a huge impact on a person, It has allowed me to be more open to different opinions and points of view, and definitely more understanding. I didn't notice this until recently because I had assumed it was the norm, but it wasn't until college that I realized how different my childhood was compared to some of my friends. I realized that I had never been sheltered from anything and that growing up in Springfield allowed me to not only be "book smart" but "street smart." There are things that I witnessed and experienced growing up, that some kids my age wouldn't believe. I think a lot of people from Springfield can say that, but I also believe that we are an incredibly supportive community, regardless of what people on the outside looking in may assume. My high school calls its students "The Family." and it's true, Springfield is a family especially in a time of need.
It has been said that most people who leave Springfield end up coming back at some point. Springfield has been a huge part of my journey, and while It is not my destination I am very thankful to have started here.
