Endless Number of Things that Hispanics Go Through When Growing Up

Growing up as a Hispanic young lady has brought many memories to mind when I think of my culture. Most Hispanics can relate because there are struggles that we all faced as kids, teens and even as adults. Below, are a few things that all Hispanics can remember or hear everyday.

1.The only cure to ANY sickness is Vick's.

2. When entering your grandparents home, all furniture is covered in clear plastic.

3. Hand towels in the bathroom are only for "decoration."

4. When wanting to eat a sandwich, one loaf of bread can be either used as a hot dog bun or a hamburger bun.

5. Baking in the oven is a struggle because before you even start, you have to take at least 20 pots and pans out of it.

6. Instead of finding butter in the butter can, you find pins and needles.

7. Chicken soup is made on Sundays and in 100 degree weather.

8. When you're on the road wanting food but your parents say that there's rice and beans in the house.

9. Tamales are a year-round dish that comes up at every family get together.

10. As mom says it, "Ponte las pillas". (Put on your batteries--get it together!)

11. The table centerpieces are either fake fruit or fake flowers.

12. On Saturdays, we are waken up by loud Bachata music to clean the whole house.

13. At home, you wear "chanclas" (Flip flops).

14. On your field trip day, your lunch consists of a small bologna sandwich, a ripe banana, and a water bottle.

15. When you're home alone dancing to Bachata but you feel lonely so you grab the broom. 15. Carpooling in the smallest car ever--3 people sitting on each other's laps.

16. That moment when your mom is on the phone with someone you've never met and passes you the phone to say "hello", like you know them.

17. When you're at a quiñceanera with 100 kids running around.

18. That awkward moment when it's a holiday and/or family gathering and everyone asks the "y tu novio/a" (where's your boyfriend/girlfriend?") question.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
