Why You Shouldn't Take Living At Home For Granted

You don't know what you have until it's gone.

This one is pretty self-explanatory but I feel like it needs to be said for all the kiddos out there who have no idea what they're about to lose.

Free laundry

Yeah, okay, it technically costs money to run the laundry machine at home but hey, it's not your money right? Plus, there aren't near as many people and you don't have to wait hours to get a machine. You also don't have to guard your clothes to keep people from stealing your stuff.

Free food

Again, I know I'm not the one paying for my meal plan, but every time I use my points or a meal swipe, it hurts me just like it would if I was paying for it myself. Eventually, you'll miss being able to walk into your pantry and just grab something rather than waiting in line or paying for it.

Home cooked meals

Remember when you were a little kid and you would ask your mom if you could get something to eat on the way home and she would say, "We have food at home!" or, "I made dinner!" and you would get really angry over it? Yeah, no more. You'll be thankful for homecooked meals when you don't have them anymore. Dinner at the caf does not even compare.

You're not really going to have a moment alone if you live in a dorm. It's nice to go home and finally get some sleep in your own bedroom and not have to be super sneaky in getting dressed under a towel or other random things like that. It's just nice.

Being able to unwind away from people

Part of why college is so fun is that you're always around people, but some of us need time to ourselves to unwind. From the moment I wake up in the morning to the moment I fall asleep, I'm always around or talking to people. It's a blast, but getting a moment to yourself is refreshing, too.

Moral of the story: appreciate what you have because it will soon be gone!

College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective. The following aren’t foolproof tips and may not apply to you, but I was able to find success with them (hope you do too!)
