10 Thoughts You Have When You Move Into Your First Apartment

In This Article:

If you've recently moved into your own space, you've probably had these thoughts.

"So, this is peace..."

When I come home, I know I will be alone. I know I can start having a dance party whenever I want, I can lay on the floor and do nothing whenever I want, I can watch whatever movie I want. At any time.

"I miss my roommates"

Sure, I can have a dance party whenever I want, but I'll be thinking of my ex-roommates (and current best friends) as I am.

"Where are all my dishes?"

For the past year, I stared down a mountain of dishes at least once every other week. I've lived in my apartment for a month and have only used 3 plates and some cups. Perhaps there's a secret void in my sink?

“I need a cat”

I'm a little lonely. I need someone to argue with over dumb things but will always love me. I need someone to snuggle with at night and to scratch me when I'm being annoying. I need someone who will always give it to me straight. Solution? A cat.

“Adulting is hard”

Bills to pay? No one to remind me about them? No one to encourage me to get out of bed and do work? What's the point?

“Am I talking to myself?”

I didn't used to be someone who talked to myself. Now, I am.

“I need to buy more decorations”

Having my own apartment has allowed me to waste an obscene amount of money on getting new decorations. I've had to talk myself out of going to thrift stores or the mall because I really don't need another candle or picture to hang on the wall.

“Where is everyone?”

When my old roommates don't respond to my texts, I get worried. I used to (almost) always know where they were because I was around when they were leaving. Now, they could be anywhere, dying in a ditch.

“I could get used to this”

Showering with the door open? Pooping with the door open? Walking around naked?

I could get used to that.

“It’ll be OK”

The best part about having an apartment is realizing that I can take care of myself and thrive independently. Sure, it gets lonely sometimes, but being alone is the best way to learn about yourself and what you want to do in the present and future.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
