Yes, I Spend My Money On Live Shows, And I'll Have Those Memories Forever

Before high school, I never really had an interest in experiencing the magic of performing arts. If there was a movie, why watch a play? If all of the songs of my favorite artists were available online, why go to a concert? If comedy specials were available on Netflix, what difference would it make if I went to watch it in person? It would make all the difference.

The first performance by professionals I ever had the pleasure of viewing was "The Lion King"... on Broadway! That definitely set the bar high, not only for its popularity but also since it still is to this day, my favorite Disney animated film. The tangibility of the event as a whole made it completely surreal. The grand opening, with the actors, singers, and dancers in their animal costumes, almost gliding through the rows of the audience delivered a feeling like no other. We weren't separate from them, but rather we were an integral part, as the audience, to their spectacle.

Later on, I had the opportunity to go to concerts of my favorite artists in American and Indian music, Imagine Dragons and Arijit Singh, respectively. The amount of energy they put into giving a show like that is unbelievable and left me in awe. Sure my ears were ringing for the rest of the night, but it would leave me with a euphoria that I've only ever felt at those times. Of course for the next couple of weeks or so, I couldn't get either of their songs out of my head.

The most recent performer I am so glad I got to see in person was the comedian, Hasan Minhaj, on his Before the Storm tour. Television makes everything seem so scripted but being able to see first hand, how important timing is in telling a joke or story really gives a new found appreciation for such a skill. Performers, no matter what their talent is, put all of their effort into giving their audiences an unforgettable experience. It's something that just can't be felt through reading a book or watching it from the comfort of home. Because of this, I honestly believe that their skills are extremely underrated and deserve to be appreciated and felt more. It really is a sensation like no other and always leaves me wanting more.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
