Don't become another statistic this summer, choose not to drink and drive.

As summer approaches, we often find the parties to be more frequent and the booze more free flowing. With that being said, I don't think it's uncommon to find ourselves farther from home at those parties than we are during the school year. In a small town, it's not uncommon to be at a social event in the next town over, or fifteen miles down a dirt road somewhere. Without being able to walk back to the dorms, bum a ride off of a friend at 2 a.m., or call "Safe Ride" (or whatever sober driving service your college town provides), it leaves few options to get you home safely.

On average, according to the MADD website, two-thirds of people will be involved in a drunk driving accident some time during their lifetime. You've heard it all before, drunk driving more often than not, affects more than just the driver. Pedestrians get hit, other vehicles get demolished or the driver ends up wrapped around a telephone pole. Nobody wins when you choose to drive drunk. Unfortunately, the group with the highest number of drunk driving incidents are people in their 20s. That's us.

This summer, be extra cautious and choose to not drive drunk. I guarantee that your friends, parents and siblings would much rather come pick you up at 3 a.m. than have to pick up your belongings from a coroner because you chose to drive drunk. It's not worth trading your future or someone else's just to get yourself home after a party, it's OK to have to ask for a ride. If you can't choose to not drive for your own sake, do it for the family and friends of the people that you could potentially hurt or kill if you choose to drive.

You've heard it a million times, but it's important to remember who else you can affect by choosing to get behind the wheel. It's stupid, and quite frankly, it's selfish to drive drunk.

Putting other people at risk just because you've had a few too many is cowardly because you didn't just call to ask for a ride. So be smart, and don't drive if you've had too many. Statistically speaking, the fatalities surrounding drunk driving have declined in recent years, so continue being proactive about it and save a few lives.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
