The Best things about Living off Campus

I will never have to deal with the constant dorm room drama again.

I am a junior in college and was really getting tired of living on campus after my first two years of school. I was sick of DPS knocking on my door, the constant noise from people who went out partying at night, and the paper thin walls making your buisness the entire hall's buisness. Needless to say I am thrilled to be living off campus and there are so many perks to having an apartment instead of a dorm room.

1. No more Cafeteria.

I really enjoy healthy food, so the cafeteria was never my favorite place to eat. While I occasionally ate on campus against my better judgment, most of the time I struggled to cook inside my dorm room. I love cooking and making up my own recipes by playing around with my favorite ingredients. One of the hardest things about living on campus was attempting to cook with my makeshift dorm kitchen. For starters, the George Forman Grill I had was completely illegal, in addition to my 900 Watt microwave and Croc pot. So whenever there was a fire alarm, DPS or RA room check, or a school break, these illegal utensils were hidden out of sight. Needless to say I became quite the master at cooking with very little to work with, but I am very happy to have an oven, stove, and a dishwasher to my disposal in my new apartment.

2. Privacy

It was really annoying how at any moment, you could get an email from residence life saying that there was a room check, the fire department came to check for hazzards, or that any RA could enter your room at any time, for any reason. I never enjoyed the lack of privacy, and now that I have my own place, the only people who can enter, are those who I allow to enter.

3. No Roommates

Roommates are just complicated when living in such a closed space. You live on different schedules so when you sleep, and when you are awake can get very annoying. I am a night owl and enjoyed staying up late, whereas my past roommates went to bed very early. It was also complicated when the roommates had guests over, especially of the romantic variety. Long story short, it is nice not having to deal with roommate drama.

4. Space

Without such small enclosed dorm spaces, I can actually have a closet that fits my clothes, a laundry that functions, and room to relax after a busy day of sports, work, and classes. I no longer have to live in a small cubicle.

Dorm living was not my cup of tea, nor do I think anyone really likes living in a dorm. However it is crucial to the expirience of college and teaches you a lot of valuable lessons for later on in life. While I am happy I went through it and learned a lot about myself and other people, I am much happier living on my own.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
