5 Things Being In A Sorority Has Taught Me

Dear World,

You know, I talk about my sorority a lot. I talk about it so much because it has made a difference in my life. I am nowhere near the same person I used to be, and here are some of the ways I have become better thanks to my life as an Alpha Sig.

1. I have become more out going.

Before I joined, I used to just fly under the radar and I never really was able to just start a conversation. I would get really red from blushing because I would be so nervous. Now, I can literally start a conversation with anyone! But it is also more then that, when it comes to being outgoing, I also used to get really nervous about talking in front of people and with weekly meetings and being in charge of recruitment, that problem basically doesn't exist.

2. I have learned to balance a lot in my schedule.

I have always been the type of person to be involved in things and I would be sort of active in them. I basically did what I had to do, and then went about my life. Well, when college started I decided to just try everything because if not now, than when. Once I joined I was able to have more confidence to do more, which meant adding a lot onto my plate of a typical 18 credit hours. I have learned to really prioritize my life.

3. I have learned to ask for help.

This has been something I always struggled with because I felt as if I was burdening people when I asked. However, being in my position it is not something you can do on your own. I need help. I say 'hey I don't have time to do this can you go for me,' or 'can you pick this up I have something else'. And my sisters, they understand and where right there.

4. I have learned to work with all different personalities.

Of all things, this I would say is the most crucial aspect of being in a sorority. It really is a diverse place and it opens opportunity to working with so many different people, some natural leaders, some natural followers, some who are fluid with roles. And I have learned that everyone speaks differently, say hey can you do this may not always mean the same to one versus another. It is important to learn how to be well rounded with asking or needing help. In the real world, you do not have someone to hold your hand and help you communicate, kinda something you just have to feel for.

5. I have learned there is no such thing as friend type.

Last but not least, I have most definitely learned that when it comes to friendship you will find the right people at the weirdest times. One of my greatest friends I have made in my chapter we communicate through RBF and I am pretty sure I would have never been able to talk to her because I would have been like well she is super judgmental but really my face looks the same and that is just who we are. Never would have talked to her without the sorority... Guess that is life my friends.

Sincerely,

The One Who Grew

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
