If You Could Live Forever...

Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let your mind transcend reality. Let the wind whisk you away into the realm of forever, where your own mortality does not exist. You stand in the same shoes, see the same face when you look in the mirror, and breath the same air, yet one thing is different. When everything and everyone you know now fades away, you will live on for the rest of eternity…

Every day, you wake up, go to class, get lunch, and go home. Sometimes, you go to work to make some extra cash, head to the library to catch up on your history readings, or maybe get an iced latte with a girl from econ. Jack has been texting you on and off for the last few weeks after you met at a bar downtown, but you don’t know if you’re feeling it yet. You’re constantly stressed out about keeping your GPA above a 3.0, but lately, chemistry has been destroying you. Your mom is always bugging you about coming home to visit, but, weekend after weekend, you find an excuse to stay at school.

Every day, there’s another struggle. You repeat the same routine on a continuous cycle, but with every day passing, you realize that you’re just going through the motions. As the days fly by, you stay the same, but the world around you is constantly evolving. Your friends have found careers, moved to different cities, and most importantly, discovered a love that they plan to grow old with. For you, relationships come and go, but you know that nothing can last forever. But hey, if you live forever, there will be plenty of other fish in the sea, right? There is no end to the possibilities of what your future may hold.

Years pass, and you find yourself lonelier than ever. You refrain from finding permanence, because when you’re the only one who’s immortal; everything you know and love will come to an end eventually. But you’re lucky, right? You have the power to discover every white sand beach, icy cove, towering mountain, and vast open plain that this Earth has to offer, because let’s face it—nothing can stop you. You’ll stumble upon every kind of person imaginable, will rock every trend that has ever been sported, and not a morsel of food will go un-tasted. You will experience the power of revolution, as technology continues to change the way everything works and operates. You’ll live under the wrath of tyrants, the inspiration of incredible leaders, and maybe even experience a time in which everyone is equal. There truly are no limits to the type of life you want to live.

When all is said and done, you’re still here. You’re trapped inside a world that won’t ever spit you out, with no attachments to anyone or anything. The fear of death is not within your grasp, and never will be. For you, religion is merely a fallacy, because you’ll never know what it’s like to “be with God." There is no afterlife, just an eternity in the one you’re currently living in. Memories are too painful, because they remind you of all that you’ve lost, and will never see again under any circumstances. If you could, would you choose this life? Would it be worth it?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
