Getting excited about the little things in life is important. Whether it’s over one of the beautiful songs on Zayn’s new album, tacos in the dining hall or seeing your friend after a long day, it’s the little things that keep us going. Think about it. You wake up knowing that your day consists of four classes back to back or a full day of work. Looking forward to the little things is what will get you through that day. If your favorite song comes on the radio or you wear your favorite shoes on campus all day, I guarantee that your day will be 10 times better than if you followed through with the basic steps of your day until bed time.
If you get amused by the smaller things in life, think about how far that will carry your happiness for years to come. No, I’m not talking about seeing a status update or an Instagram picture that makes you smile. Happiness goes beyond staring into our phone screens. Sure, receiving a nice text from someone that you value in your life is always a joyous moment, but calling them or visiting them in person is even better! Someday when we grow old, we will depend on the little things in life to make us happy. We will have to be able to partake in new conversations with our spouse that we retire with, and be entertained by life, not the jobs that we were once accustomed to. That’s why it’s important to have fun from the time that we are young until the day that we leave this life.
Go for a walk, see a play, read a book, buy a coffee. I guarantee that you will remember partaking in an activity that makes you smile, far longer than you will remember the negative or dreadful parts of your day. Life is too short to have regrets or be bored. Save up. Travel to your dream place. Play the sport that you always wished to play. Buy the concert tickets. It is OK to splurge every once in awhile to do what makes you happy. When you grow old someday and look back on your life, you are going to want remember the memories that you made with your friends and family all throughout each stage of life. So start living now while you are still young. Ditch the regrets and the worries and start living for you.
In a time with so much hatred and violence in the world, be the light that shines out in the darkness. Do a random act of kindness for someone and help out others in need. The little things in life matter. You were put on this planet for a reason, so get up and start living.
