Little Things To Help Your Productivity

We all reach that point where we feel like we can't do work anymore

There is a mental wall at that one point or another, we will all hit in our lives. In our lives, we are constantly going, going, going, and trying to do work. But many of us eventually reach the point where no matter what we do, we can't seem to do anything productive. And then you sit there on your futon staring at the walls for five or more hours, occasionally shifting so there isn't a permanent impression on your futon... Don't tell me I'm the only one who's done this. So here's a list of things you can do when you're feeling less than productive:

1. Read a book

Simple, I know. But reading a book can be a great way to keep your mind engaged and active while not actually having to do anything that's actual work. Let's be real, would you rather read five chapters of a book for class or that new thriller all your friends are talking about? Point. Proven.

2. Listen to music

Sometimes you just need to read and let someone else's thoughts and feelings wash over you. You can have an epic dance party, sing at the top of your lungs, sit quietly and be introspective, or listen to sad songs and have a good cry. I think music makes every situation better.

3. Catch up on your favorite T.V. show, or find a new favorite

Wondering what all the buzz with Stranger Things is about? Open up your Netflix account and find out. Be careful though- the autoplay option on Netflix will pull you in and never let you out. One day I wasn't feeling particularly productive, so I sat down to watch an episode or two or Quantico... Several several hours later, my roommate walks in to find me in the same position as I was when she left in the morning.

4. Take a nap

Seriously, this has to be the best option on this list. Not only is napping a great way to reframe you to be productive, but sleep is good for you! So therefore you can say that a nap is a necessity, because it really technically is! Where would I be without naps? Probably slightly more addicted to coffee than I currently am...

5. Plan a spontaneous adventure

Nothing will get you out of your unproductive funk like spontaneity. Whether that be a solo adventure or a day trip with friends, get out there and do something slightly crazy. I love days where a friend or five and I are just like "Let's go here" and we just have a blast.

6. Clean

Sometimes all you need is to clean your room. I've found that I absolutely cannot get anything if my room is too messy. It doesn't matter whether I'm trying to do work in my room or elsewhere. If it's messy, I'm not as productive.

7. Exercise

Any sort of physical activity is great. It's good for your, it gets you moving. If you go for a run or a bike ride, it usually gets you outside. You always feel better after working out (thank you endorphin high). And you usually get a sense of accomplishment, which sets you up to go accomplish more... "Yeah, I did just run five miles. I can totally write this five page paper."

Hopefully after doing one of these activities, you're ready to get back to work. You can even do multiple of these things at once. Listen to music while you're cleaning. Take a nap with friends. Go for a run with a buddy and bring a small portable speaker. Next time you start to feel the inability to be productive creep up on you, instead of trying to power through, pause and take time for some TLC. You'll thank yourself later.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
